Where is your British accent from?

An interesting and well thought out quiz from the New York Times that seeks to identify where you come from in Britain based on your answers to the regional words. Answer the first 25 questions and then put in your location to get a further 50 questions.
They've got a good grip already. The response to the previous question is shown as you answer the next and lets you see how regional you are as you go.

It's got me as being from the Oxford-Cambridge area which is fairly good for a well-spoken Essex boy!  ;D

Well, I'd try it, but the site just refuses to respond.  :banghead:

Not bad, but I don't know anywhere else where the butty would be used, apart from God's country. Does anyone else use Bampi?

Hmm it put me as just north of Luton. Witch as it happens is about 45 miles south east of me. So prety much on the mark.

Despite the fact im an expat Londoner, Ive certainly developed a Northants accent since we moved here in 1978. Mind you im told my London accent can start to reappear if im out side the UK for more than 5 or 6 days..............Cant say ive ever noticed it myself.
I always hope for the best.
Unfortunately,
experience has taught me to expect the worst.

Och well lads, I dinae ken where they think a "British" accent comes from. There are so many different variations about this Kingdom of ours.
I rather suspect they are thinking of a London area accent.
Goodness me how wrong can they be.
There are so many different accents in this country that I doubt if.
I remember one situation in Southern Ireland when the young lady receptionist in the hotel in Limerick said how much she liked my accent.
I am from SW Scotland, but it was rather nice to get such a compliment, mind you I did nor even realise that I had an accent at that time.

It's not about accent, it's about dialect and is remarkably accurate with just a few questions.

I got it to work under Chrome, but not with IE11. It had me much further to the south east than where I think of my home town, which was Oxford. But I attended 11 different primary schools, all over the UK.

My results were rather interesting.

Firstly, it picked that I wasn't British.

But the regional likelihood spread across the UK was Mid-Northern Scotland (Argyll/Perthshire), the (I think) Yorkshire/Lancashire regions, the South-Eastern counties (from Norfolk through to Dorset), a tiny cluster around Belfast & a lonely (but darker than most) Worcestershire (maybe Herefordshire?).

I thought it might struggle with my lesser known accent but it was spot on, pretty much from the first question!

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Did it on the laptop.  Thinks I'm from anywhere between smogland and the scots border.

Fairly accurate for me (London) although it took a while getting there. One of the problems is that some of the language I use would be classed as very 60/70's and language changes
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Absolutely spot on for me. Ayr in SW Scotland.

Well it "narrowed" me down to the southeast of England, which given that I was born in London and raised in rural Hertfordshire isn't too bad. Still closer than most Americans, who think I'm an Aussie ;D
