And the really troublesome part: the underside.
For contrast, go back through this thread and see just how bad it all was to start with!   ^_^

Cast the first of the vac-formable master patterns today.
Now, to...ah, well....vac-form them, I guess.

Fingers and toes crossed...

and onwards she marches....

great stuff barry - her belly looks a million times better than it used to...to see it now, you would have no idea!

what's happening with her wing tips? not going to add tip tanks are you?

absolutely loving the "dulling down" of one of the most distinctive planes of all time...genius...pure demented genius!

Thanks, Ben.

Nope, no tip tanks but that would honestly be too cool, wouldn't it? But it would therefore distract from the dullness I'm trying to bring to the subject.

Hmmmm, a "regular" Corsair with tip-tanks....

On this one, I still have to scratchbuild the wingtips.  I have drawn and cut out the wingtip templates and now I have to shape two pairs of them.  They'll basically be believable continuations of the same squared off theme.  Not very much wider overall, either (I think the templates add only about 1/2" to each side----give or take a JMN's micrometer measurement).

There were a couple of pics of the mock-up posted way, waaaaay back.

This is really shaping up very well.  B) It looks like your hard work is paying off. I will say that it has given me an idea or two. One is to have the wings as you have them, but add a jet engine and a pointy nose. Another would be to sweep the gull wings and add a jet engine. Another one to add to my what if wish list. ^_^  Also, this slogan came to mind for your bird. "Morsair, the unbent FU-5" Get it , like 7UP, the uncola? I know, it's corny, but I LIKE it. Looking forward to seeing more progress.

You try it and yer more insane than Barry and that's hard to do.

Baz there's something very perverse about the amount of interest and excitement I have of this project. It's gotta be wrong to be liking the uglification of one of the prettiest planes ever built. Sir you are twisted and it's contagious.

Hmmm maybe we could have a group build to take pretty planes and make them look like they were built in pre-war France?

I invite all and any criticism, except about Eric The Dog, it's not his fault he's stupid

It'd be hell for ground handling, but I'm sorely tempted to look at the installation of a Chrysler IV2220 in a Corsair as a different "what-if".  Say if it had been used as a testbed instead of a P-47.

Very interesting idea... And I think I have 2 XP-47H boxes in my cave, that may be used for that. Alas, I have not the scratch built ability of Master JHM :( . I will come back in modellism step by step, starting with the easiest inventions...
By the way, have you ever seen a picture of the Curtiss project of V-2220 engine on the P-60?
[the word "realistic" hurts my heart...]

If I've seen that one, Tophe, it would've been strictly while browsing through the Putnam book on Curtiss aircraft.

Ugly Spitfires?
Ugly Mustangs?
Ugly Messerschmitts (oh wait, they already WERE ugly!).

How 'bout uglifying contemporary jets, too?

I may try on computer but I will NEVER spend weeks of plastic work to reach the very top in ugliness, assassinating a beauty - even if I am French, yes, Alvis...

Maybe for the kings of scratch-building among us... yes, Corsairs with V-2220 engine.

I'm waiting for them to find a way to screw up the Hornet and some would say they've got a start with the Super Hornet.( not me, of course :D )

JHM,
Anymore progress on this bird. I like to pressure other people when I can't or won't do any work myself. Just kidding. Maybe this has been covered, but since I'm a dial up cave man and it would take a lot of time to go back( I'm supposed to be remodeling a bathroom right now and not "playing" on the 'puter), I'll ask. Are you using the orginial gear and prop? I just realized that without the bent wings, that prop is gonna be huge.

No more progress since we started working on possibly building a new home.
Yes, my inquiry on that other thread about Dream Workshops was not necessarily a rhetorical one after all!  But we'll see.

Normal landing gear but I did chop down the big prop a bit.
