Some progress.

The gas bag attachment trellis is complete but not attached yet.  The rudder is incomplete.  I will be building elevators the same way.

The rudder reminds me of the sails from a traditional Chinese Junk

Many junks also had fenestrated rudders, it made it easier to turn,
but didn't effect its efficuency.

On the larger junks the rudders were also able to be raised and lowered
vertically to reduce draft when necessary, and to act as a keel when
sailing under certain conditions. The rudders tended to be proportionally
much larger than rudders on European type ships, especially on the
larger junks.

Thank you Jon.  A font of interesting knowledge as always.
Nice junk.

That's 1mm half round glued onto thin sheet.  It's an experiment in scratchbuilding.

I dunno if this is applicable to your model, but since we're talking about Chinese Junks, I read somewhere that they have a compartment right aft that is open to the sea through a series of holes in the transom.  These holes act to slow the movement of water into and out of the craft, and this mitigates the effects of waves on the vessel.

Going up a wave, the holes slow the water going in, so the (diminishing) buoyancy of the chamber helps to keep the stern up; then at the top of the wave, the weight of the water aft helps to balance the craft and slow the dip of the bow ... or something.  (I'm a sub sailor - these surface things confuse me.)

Where am I going?  And why am I in a handbasket?

Sounds like a primitive automatic ballast system, which a gazzunda (goes under) sailor should understand.

As an ex-birdie (aviation) sailor, I don't think I can figure it out from that description, though. Something doesn't gel in my head about it.
