British WWII Prototype and Experimental type colours

Now most British WWII prototypes seem to have had similar colour schemes - yellow undersides with either dark green/dark earth or ocean grey/dark green uppers. However I've seen a couple of colour profiles of immediate post war prototypes intended for the FAA which had extra dark sea grey uppers as per the then current FAA general practice.

So would my Westland Whirpool proof of concept aircraft have had standard RAF or FAA upper colours for the time given that whilst it was experimental the original proposal to a FAA design spec ?

Does anyone know if there was a standard in place ?

Depends on which story you want to tell? For a late war/early post-war RAF aircraft, I think that standard dark/green/ocean grey/medium sea grey would be a sound option, just with a yellow "P" added to the fuselage. For an FAA aircraft, EDSG/sky with a low waterline would IMHO be a logical option (with a "P"), too, even though there were also NMF aircraft in both services, e .g. the Spearfish or at least one Spiteful prototype. I think that yellow undersides were not common practice anymore.

When I was building this;



I had been in contact with David Birch who was at the time the Official Rolls Royce Historian (sadly now passed away), mainly because of what I had read in his book, Rolls Royce and the Mustang (RRHT). He was the one who told me the RR Mustang Mid-Engined design would have got a Tempest tail had it flown. I built this to his description.

Originally I had painted it in the standard grey/green/over yellow bottom scheme, he told me that after the war the aircraft were mostly NMF/high speed silver over yellow bottoms, so I switched it to represent how it really would have looked like. This is the aircraft being used to test the RR Crecy engine ---

Think I'll go EDSG over yellow as I found a photo of the Firecrest in that scheme and my project could be seen as a competitor of it. I'm also not sure my p.s.r. skills are up to a natural metal/high speed silver scheme ?

We shall see, she's got to get to that stage first.
