I finally trialled some clear i've been meaning to test out for a while - SMS acrylic lacquer.  It went on OK over the Vallejo acrylic i used previously, didn't react and looks shiny.

Given it's a lacquer, what's the drying time like ?

Fast.  I give everything at least overnight before handling but this prolly didn't need that.  Not as quick as 2 pack but then it doesn't have to be mixed from 3 components (one of which has a too short shelf life) in an odd ratio, and it won't kill you slowly if you don't wear a filter mask.

Having read that back I wonder why I ever use 2 pack clear?  Oh yes, because it's the bogs dollocks, going on beautifully, drying fast and giving a beautiful shine.

A little progress on this.  I attached the previously painted brake disks, cleared the engine cover and scratched up a radiator cowl.
I still need to put clear over the transfers but that requires a warm, low humidity day.

Warm enough this evening (with humidity an acceptable 63%) for me to clear over the transfers.

The clear was touch dry after 45 minutes and could withstand light handling.  TBH it was prolly touch dry sooner but my spray table is on the other side of the shed from the bench and I was engrossed.

So far i'm impressed with this SMS clear.  I can't wait to try out the colours and the effects paint i have bought.
I've got an Auscam scheme planned for the Navy GB AAV, two tone mint green and black on a Chevy Ute and Candy Apple Red (clear red over gold)  on a show rod.

Progress at last.

I have fitted the windows to the engine cover.  This was a test of the technique I plan to use to build Blue Thunder's canopy in 1/72.
It seemed to work although I could do with thinner clear sheet.  I'll have to save some from packaging.  The framing is evergreen H, I and angle section rod.

Whilst I understand your reason for putting glazing in the engine cover, in practice wouldn't they soon get filthy ?

That looks VERY good Fred.

Now please tell us the technique that you've developed for doing this.

Yes.  But practicalities like that are often overlooked on show quality custom cars.  It's not unknown to find upholstered engine bays or wheel wells.

Nothing too tricky.  I made the frame out of evergreen rod with I, H or angle profile.  that way there is a ledge or slot into which the clear sheet can rest making the finished thing stronger (and easier to build) than if I had tried to glue the clear onto a piece of flat or round.
I glued the frame together with styrene cement and the clear into place with PVA.

Great ideas, thanks very much.

Glued the seats in today.
Body isn't permanently in place but needed to be fitted so I could get the positioning of the seats right.

Those bodyside graphics are very much 'of the period'.

Did they come with the original A100 kit or from elsewhere? They look familiar somehow.

The transfers came from this kit.  AMT Dirty Donny Vantasy ('73 Chevy Van) released about 10 years ago.  It has a huge transfer sheet designed by artist Dirty Donny.

Ahah, that's the kit, or at least a later version, of my Merlin powered Chevy van Drag 'car'.

If mine had any graphics they're long gone by now.
