Hi all,
This is another one that's been on my mind for some time, waiting for a model to come into my possession to allow me to do it. I was thinking I'd quite like to use the new-tool Airfix 1/72 kit. Then a care package from Old Wombat appears which has this kit, as well as the Hobby Boss version. After fondling the Airfix kit (steady!) and cutting the intake lip, I came to my senses and used the Hobby Boss kit for a project inspired by the real-world Curtiss XP-31 Swift.

Behold: the (backstory-less) Curtiss P-40A Retrohawk!

As well as the Hobby Boss kit I used Monogram 1/72 P-36 decals for the roundels, Academy 1/48 P-38 decals for the US ARMY, Airfix 1/72 P-40B/C decals for the fuel tanks (which I realised, when reattaching the wing gun barrels, are in a very silly place!), radiator core from an Airfix 1/72 P-51D with fairing made from blister pack, and the spats came from a long-dead Henschel Hs.126. Aerial masts and struts came from my spares box.

I hope you enjoy it!

That's nice, and colorful, too!

Just the wing supports outside of the canted spats look a little odd (to me, though)?

TomZ

This looks sooooo right!!!!

These wing supports are inspired by the Curtiss XP-31 so they look fine to me  <_< <_<

Beautiful! What a smart-looking aircraft!
Owing to the current financial difficulties, the light at the end of the tunnel will be turned off until further notice.

Old Wombat

Nice role for a simple little kit. Well done, Zac!
Has a life outside of What-If & wishes it would stop interfering!

That's really neat Zac

It somewhat reminds me of the Curtis XP-31 Swift, especially with those struts https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtiss_XP-31_Swift which I have the LF kit of sitting in the stash.

Very smart, yellow winged birds always that 'certain something, don't they?
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

The colours look like a model of our ericr champion in such bright painting... ;) (see https://www.whatifmodellers.com/index.php?topic=37003.0 )
(but I know: this is almost true here, true for the US military landplanes of the 1930s) :-\ ;D
[the word "realistic" hurts my heart...]

Thank you very much, all! I had a blast doing this one, although trying to lessen the wing's dihedral was tough. It means a lot to have such positive comments!

The Swift was the catalyst for this project. I saw a photo of it a few months back and was inspired! I mentioned it in the original post ;) A gorgeous build of the LF kit in yellow and blue was my main reference for this build.

But that's not a bad thing.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Oooops. My only excuse it was that I was so captivated by this build that I just missed it, especially given it was at the end of the sentence  ;)
