Oh sure: a Shipbucket profile only exists if somebody is motivated to put in the considerable amount of time neccessary to create it. I've given up on some where I'm only modifying an existing profile.

It takes a long time: just ask the Chinese. It's not so much building the ships and the planes, it's researching/inventing the deck procedures, then getting some people trained up in them, then building up a decent number of trained people, then getting them experienced enough to potentially go to war.

How DO you train the crews in such procedures when you don't have any ships to do it with? 

I suppose we and the Americans did it as we went along, learning by mistakes etc.

You initially build "land based carriers".  You map out your flight deck on a runway and you run the ground crew through their procedures.  The Chinese took it one step further and build a flight deck on top of a building, facing the prevailing winds.  You think fly your aircraft off of the top of the building and land them back atop.  Then after several years of doing that, your first carrier is ready and you go to sea on trials and you learn what works and what doesn't.   The Chinese endeavour is interesting to watch 'cause they are starting from scratch and don't really have the ships to make it all work.

The Russians OTOH started with small carriers and then built large ones.  Their efforts have been as great.

No, they only studied it in detail.  There were claims that they actually asked the RAN for the manuals for the catapult but were refused.  Apart from a few pointers from the Melbourne they basically have hauled themselves up by their own bootstraps.

Slightly off topic, but the June edition of Airfix Model World has a neat build of Zveda's 1/350 Soviet Battleship Marat in it's 1940 guise. Does look good.
