C-130K designation was in sequence. C-130J was used twice: originally for an unbuilt version with increased
size horizontal and vertical surfaces, strengthened landing gear and armoured landing gear sponsons; then
it was reused for the later modernized version.

I still have doubts that the K for United Kingdom thing is real as it reads like spin and seems like something
they may have made up latterly in an attempt to popularize the decisions to buy US types.

In reference to the E-3, if K = United Kingdom, why weren't they designated E-3K instead of E-3D?

It's a Whif, on a Whif forum.......If I want to call it K, I'll call it K.  As you said, the Phantom was the natural next letter, but the RAF F-111 was officially the K, so I'm going with that.  Both, like my F-105, would have been special UK only builds. 

The E-3D was the same basic spec as the E-3F, give or take a couple of items, so it wasn't really a one off, so D was the next available letter....
