Article from the Royal Aeronautical Society about the Hawker-Siddeley HSA-1011 swing-wing supersonic airliner project.

Interesting that even back in 1961 they correctly anticipated the sonic boom problems that an SST would have operating over land.

Looks like a good project for Hobbes to take on  ;D ;D

Add the spike to the nose that NASA's experimenting with and it wouldn't look out of place in some of the design studies for new SSTs.

Oh, that's pretty. Would certainly look cool in a classic BOAC livery.

The Wooksta!

BOAC?  Nice, but antiflash with 607 Sqn markings would be better.

Considering that it came from the opposite commercial camp, the wing shape of that has a lot of similarity to Barnes Wallis' 'Swallow' project.

But at least the engines don't have to swivel!
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

For some reason that stirs memories of Raymond Baxter and "Tomorrow's World" ?

To me it's how Gerry Anderson would have designed the Trident.

There was a Gerry Anderson episode where something very similar was involved. Can't remember what series it was though ? Probably International Rescue ?

Hobbes

That would be quite a challenge to build, with all the variation in fuselage shape.

Fireflash. Hypersonic airliner with tail mounted engines and wingtip mounted landing gear. It's a double decker and has a bar in each wing!

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

I can't help feeling that to fly at 250000 ft it'd need longer wings...................  ;)
