Good info chaps!  Now I feel better using said markings on a 63ish build.
So I got that going for me...which is nice....

IIRC I've seen at least one pic of a P-39 with the B&W quarter markings as per the bottom two lines.  I think it may have even been an RAF one being used for RN catapult (?) trials.

That's a LOT earlier that I thought. Looks like you've got carte blanche there AD.

Cracking pics there Fred, I'd not thought of the markings on crash test vehicles, and I used to stick the ruddy things on in the 60s!  :banghead:

It looks like Merc used a rocket to fire their cars into the block, but I can't see how they could get the speed as accurate is the regulations required like that. IIRC it had to be 31 mph plus or minus 0!

We had a speedo about a foot in diameter on the dash of our tow car, a '63 427 Ford Galaxie 2 door, and it took me an age to learn how to get the speed exactly right, without a crash test car on the end of the towline of course!

Sadly I can't identify that 5th pic down, J 33. Those three vents in the front wing should mark it out, and that D post is very distinctive, but it rings no bells with me, sorry.  :(
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage

Slightly late to the game, but I've got a book with some pics of the Hawker P.1127 using them on it's first hover in 1960.  The HP.115 had similar markings in '62 that I've seen a few aircraft use, a white cross in a black circle, very like the Cornish flag.

Adding yet more credence, in another book I found a Seafire IIc with them, from catapult trials in '44.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

as is this which doesn't have the markings but looks like a fun accessory for your Merc.

One of the cars I learned to drive on was Mercedes 240D- really could have used that booster engine- that thing was slllllooooowwww.

Would like to see some of the earlier photo calibration markings on aviation subjects.  Note the NASA Skylancer had them in the late 60's.

some inspiration

They actually have 2 Prototypes but I suspect we won't  have many modellers being inspired  by the second .

Just for fun a B-36 in camera calibration markings.
;D

I've got a decal sheet for that one, it's HUGE!   :o

I jst had a daft notion, instead of a series of circles reducing in size, use an
optometrists eye chart.

What is this TC?
If I had to guess i'd say, given it's proximity to a Mosquito, that it was a Highball.  Hard to get scale though from your photo.

it is indeed . It's in a plastic container  so you have to shoot it from above .

They have another one mocked up in launch gear
