The Air Ministry raised a number of concerns over the Avro Shackleton MR.1 especially the Rolls-Royce Griffon engines,  as they were too slow and required a lot maintenance.
The MR.2 solved a many of these concerns,  still there was a question over what engines to use.  The Americans had gone for the Wright R-3350 as these were fitted to the Lockheed EC-121 and the Lockheed Neptune,  the Canadians would also use these on the Argus.
So a new Shackleton MR. 2 would be pulled from the production line and fitted with the R-3350 engines and have 2,800hp with  three bladed propellers. Extra soundproofing was added along with a tricycle undercarriage and a deeper weapons bay. This aircraft would be used to develop the MR.3 and be refitted with Rolls-Royce Griffons.
Another concern was to lose the twin tail fins and have a single vertical tail fin. Although R-3350 as it was was referred to did have a vertical tail fin fitted it still kept the twin tail fins and MR.2 wings.
R-3350 would be returned to service as a MR.3 until replaced by the BAe Nimrod MR.1.

I have the new Revell Avro Shackleton MR.3 in the stash along with parts from various AeroClub AEW.2 conversion sets. I also have kept the resin R-3350 engines from the RVHP Lockheed Warning Star WV-1 conversion set.

You seen this?

Hmmm, that fin and tail look remarkably like those from the Avro Ashton, and thanks to The Wooksta's generosity I have a set of them in resin.........
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Thanks,  I shall be applying the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Stupidly Simple) approach to this build although the Mk4 does look like a future build.

The wings from the 1/72 Academy C-97 Stratofreighter fit the Airfix Avro Shackleton MR. 2.
I have omitted the interior work stations and arm chairs,  leaving the cockpit  as per instructions and twin tail fins. I will sand down the locating markers for the radome of the AEW and fit a gun pack under the nose. The nose hump will be flattened for better visibility containing the radar.

Well things haven't gone to plan,  so I am now using the Pratt + Whitney
R-4360 Wasp Major as provided in the Academy Boeing B-377 Stratocruiser,  the propellers are from the Heller DC-6B kit as they are a better fit. The main landing gear also comes from the Academy kit.  The vertical tail fin is part of one of the rear tail planes with the Airfix Avro Shackleton MR. 2 twin tail fins removed and sanded back.
There's a slight resemblance to the Avro Type 716 or even the Type 719 if I squint  my eyes..
