Impressive, I have absolutely no idea what half this electronic stuff does. Glad you do

Actually, I have no idea what half the stuff does either.  ;D
But some stuff I have read about from The Warzone on THE DRIVE website.

Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

Other than working on the main radar mast today and getting it painted, I'm also deciding on the life rafts for my model.
Trying to figure out how many I should have and the locations of them. Any suggestions, folks?
The solid red squares are permanent locations.
The red line squares or rectangles are potential locations, but not sure yet.
I'm going to use some life rafts from a 1/350 TAMIYA Enterprise aircraft carrier kit. These are "slightly" a tiny bit bigger than the ones from an Arleigh Burke destroyer kit.
The life rafts on an aircraft carrier need to be a bit bigger as the carrier has a larger crew. Carrier life rafts hold about 50 people. The ones on cruisers, destroyers, etc. hold about 25 people according to a Wikipedia link I read. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifeboat_(shipboard)
So a battleship is a pretty large ship with a large crew complement similar to an aircraft carrier. It only makes sense that the life rafts on a battleship should be the same ones for an aircraft carrier.

QuoteThe United States Navy (USN) uses five types of custom inflatable liferafts as well as a number of commercially available Coast Guard approved liferafts. The 25-person MK-6 and MK-7 are used on surface ships, the 50-person MK-8 on aircraft carriers, and LRU-13A and LRU-12A on aircraft and submarines respectively. Smaller combatant craft often use 6, 10 or 15-person commercial liferafts.[11] The number of liferafts carried on USN ships is determined based on the maximum number of personnel carried aboard plus 10% as a safety margin. Aircraft carriers carry either 254 MK7 liferafts or 127 MK8 life rafts.

I'm impressed with the level of detail

Thanks.

Left on the checklist:
The work list is still long. Here are things I still need to do:
Add more photoetch hatches, ladders, stairs, fire hose racks, and life rings.
Paint and add life raft canisters. DONE
Paint and add radar mast and various whip antennas. 95% done.
Add 2 more 30mm guns on either side of bridge superstructure.
Add 2 25mm guns in the fantail tubs.
Paint and add aft helicopter station. Painted, but not added yet.
Paint and add 2 RAM missile launchers on either side of aft smokestack. DONE
Paint and detail RHIB stowage boat areas and boats. DONE
For the RHIB boat stowage areas, I am undecided if I will leave both open, or both closed, or one open and one closed? DONE
Build and add 2-3 helicopters near aft flight deck.
Add ECM, satcom domes, and other small electronic antennas and such. 70% done.
Add 2 Mk.32 triple tube torpedo launchers. Painted, but not added yet.
Add SBROC chaff decoy launchers. DONE
Add 2 laser defense systems. DONE
Add 4 5"/62 Mk.45 guns.
Add anchors.
Decals.
Build and add display base.
.........and I'm sure there's probably more stuff I've forgotten.

I always end up with a list of things I still need to do when I get near the end of a project, however being an aircraft modeller it's nothing like the length of that one  :o  ;D

Need opinions on the following. Which do you think I should go with?

How about splitting the difference & having the two just forward of the LDS & one on each side of the VLS deck?

Well, the end is almost in sight.  Just have a few more things to go. But the big question that is probably on everyone's mind is: WHAT ABOUT THE MAIN GUN TURRETS?
Well, I still haven't decided what I want to have. Page 2 or 3 of this thread gives some options from Shapeways that I have been thinking about. But I can't get anything yet till I get some money which should be soon as I'll be helping a friend clean his house.

More pics, and an update on the "To Do" list.

98% DONE! This is "almost" the final pictures of my model. BUT.........I still have three more things to do yet:
1. Add more photoetch fire hoses around the ship as soon as I am able to buy more.
2. Add main gun turrets. Easier said than done. Still searching Shapeways.  :banghead:
3. Finish building display base. (Currently doing that today.)
So........this is it for pictures for awhile. No new pics until I get the above three things done.

Tiny update for today. Still have to eventually get the main gun turrets from Shapeways sometime this week,
but at least I got the display bases done.

I regret to inform everybody that this project is now officially.......SUNK. :(
All I had left to do was to add 3 main gun turrets. But due to various issues, that will not happen. Not for the remainder of this year and I'm not sure for how long next year. So, the model is getting packed up never to see the light of day again unless some miracle happens.

Sorry, folks. I tried, but just couldn't make it work. :(

Hope things improve for you!  I'd just fit the regular 16inch turrets on there- every Iowa needs the big guns!
