I think a goods train would commence with a 6, but there are railway experts here who can confirm that..............or tell me I've got it totally wrong.

Some of them would, but there were some Class 2 freights at one stage.

But it's all changed since my day.

Class 6, 7, 8 and 9 are or were all goods/freight/departmental workings different by being loaded or unloaded and or speed.

Almost all our test trains, apart from the APT-E itself, were Class 9s, which meant we got shunted into every passing loop on the system en route to a test site.

It could take all DAY to get from Derby to Carstairs sometimes!
