Wow, that looks great!

What engine was it supposed to use? Some Pegasus derivative with a straight pipe instead of the aft nozzles?

Zen

It was a brand new engine by RR, called the RB422 which gave 31,400lb dry and 44,600lb full PCB reheat.

A straight through version could have been a real alternative to the domance of the large US military turbofans.

P1216 data

Length: 55.9ft
Span: 34.75ft
Wing area: 421 sqft

Speed mach 1+ at sea level and 1.8 at 36,000ft (air combat role)

Weights where estimated at 31,000lb (air combat role 2 ASRAAM and 2 AMRAAM), assumably the max weight was far higher.
To win without fighting, that is the mastry of war.

Wonderful!  Congratulations (to the modeller and designers)...

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

OOOH!    Is that strictly for the UK or can friendly nations buy them?  Maybe, the Texas Navy could use some!  What's it's main mission?

Hi Bryan

The aircraft was intended to replace the Harrier and the Jag in UK service so mission would be similar to the JSF F-35B VTOL variant. Its capable of both Air to Air and Air to Ground and anti-shipping missions.

If developed then its quite possible the US would have joined in, they did with the Harrier after all, then again all the money went into high tech & stealthy when this design was being developed (1982-1987), but you can see it caertainly had potential.

Cheers

Now where to start on doing the next one....

As we noticed from the generally positive feedback, Joe intends on having a go at producing one of these later this year. As a result i shall be adapting what i learnt doing the prototype into making some moulding masters for joe to use.

I know MartinH is intending to follow this build and hopefully do his own so i wonder is anybody else interested in following the build ?

If so then i'll list up the bits required later today.

Cheers

I always hope for the best.
Unfortunately,
experience has taught me to expect the worst.

QuoteHeres some shots of the 1216 prototype i built. (Prototype in that proving that it could be built, the actual moulding master for Joe will avoid the gaffs i made with this one  ;) )
