The Republic of Tsingtao Air Force identified the requirement of a heavy strategic lifter, to supplement their C-17 Globemaster IIIs.  A competitive bid was awarded to Antonov State Company for the Republic's first non-US designed transport based on the Russian Air Force's version, the An-124-300.  Notable design differences include replacing the Progress D-18T turbofans with four Rolls Royce Trent 1000C turbofans, rated at 69.5 thousand pounds thrust; Rockwell Collins EFIS avionics suite, and THALES tactical communications suite.  The aircraft are produced at the Changxi Heavy Industries/Junkers joint aircraft plant, located in Changxi.
