Gentlemen, what I will do when I get a spare hour or so latter in the week and I can concentrate on just the one thing is go in and merge these duplicate subjects and delete any duplicate replies. Sorry I didn't do this earlier, but I'm afraid my brain has to be in "the right place" when I use the Merge function and it hasn't been the last few days. To much after Christmas/New Year stuff and domestic necessities. Now't nasty, just a bit time consuming.

Rail Bridge?

Actually since they started using epoxy paint on it some years ago, it's no longer a 'never ending task'.

Certainly is. I only crossed it for the first time a couple of years ago and it's certainly impressive even if you are "inside" it when on the train. Being inside it was certainly throwing the guy opposite who was complaining to his other half about the inability to get a decent photo of it

He must have been  nuts, you need to be MILES away before you can get a good pic of the whole Bridge. 

I spent a couple of months working on (and in....) it in 1970 trying to test how strong it was. A total waste of time as even with every spare loco we could find parked on it, the bridge didn't even notice!

Our Chief Engineer said 'You could scrap 90% of this b****r and it wouldn't matter a jot!'

I assume that the "belt and braces" approach to the massive construction of the Forth Bridge was a reaction to the unfortunate mishap with the first Tay Bridge.  *** A civil engineer acquaintance*** reckoned that The Bridge  would sink into the ground under its own weight before it fell apart.

*** When I first met him, the manner in which he was voicing his opinion of a sub-contractor would have had him defined as an extremely uncivil engineer***

Exactly right.

Sir Thomas Bouch, who designed the failed Tay Bridge, had already started to build a vast rail suspension bridge across the Forth. But confidence in him evaporated after the collapse of his Tay Bridge and a new design was commissioned from Fowler and Barlow, with the massive result that we have now.
