If I remember corectly there were trials of a multi axis tilting helicopter pad some years ago, perhaps something like that would work?

Yes, supported on a hexapod mount made my my last employers.

That's pretty much what I had in mind before Rheged suggested the Skyhook, a system that's always intrigued me.  ;D

The Skyhook would be definitely "interesting" with a chopper in a force nine gale.  The gyrostabilised chopper platform appears much easier from the piloting perspective, with a "bear hook" or a similar arrangement for the chopper to lower a line and be "dragged" down onto the platform.

They only tested the Skyhook concept with the civvie 2 seat Harrier, G-VTOL, and then they never actually connected the aircraft and the 'hook'.

But John Farley said it was relatively easy to hold a hover position under the 'hook', even in a wind, as the 'hook' end was stabilised to follow the Harrier's position. I don't know what  they used for position sensors though, it was quite a while back for current levels of optical tracking. The system was designed to work in up to Sea State 6 so it should work in a lifeboat's normal weather conditions.

i seem to remember from reading Jane's Defence Weekly many decades ago that they put some mirrors on top of the Harrier and had a sensor which could reflect light off of them and pick it up.  Seems to have worked.  The point I was making was about the problems of a chopper holding a position in a wind, close to a crane stalk.  Much easier to have the chopper lower a line and grab onto a grate on the deck and then haul itself down and grab onto the deck.  No problems with erring blades then.   You could use it to actually support the chopper as a diorama, with it hovering overhead.  A piece of thickish piano wire would do quite nicely, between the deck and the chopper, supporting it.

There's a quantity of Tamiya Mosquitoes on order from eBay.  The research is turning up many that are just itching to be done, such as this one:

Ahah, sounds like a good idea that. John Farley didn't mention it at all. Next time I'm at Brooklands I'll see if G-VTOL still has the mirrors as the Skyhook programme was its last active role.

That could work, yes. I want to show the chopper doing its thing with a tow rope somehow, but that can wait until after the main part of both builds.

My now ex-wife got mad at me for starting a collection of Meng World War Toons tank kits for my now 4 year old son. Allied tanks only, mainly because they don't have the J Panzer IV. So far, I have the Stuart, Sherman, Firefly, and T-34, no others, yet... Lol.  ;D  ;D
