Jack Lynch was the Prime Minister of Eire in 1969.  The Battle of the Bogside erupted that year in Derry.  He made a speech on TV where he suggested that the Irish Government might need to act to help the Catholics of Northern Ireland.  It caused shockwaves through the establishments of Northern Ireland and Britian.  What would have happened if the Irish Defence Force was ordered north? :banghead:

Very interesting documentary. Thanks for the link. The Irish Military Commanders were brutally realistic in their assessment of their chances of success vs. the British Army.

They are indeed.  Pity they got the weapons wrong.  They state they were armed with .303in rifles but in the scenes carry a mix of FN FALs and Steyr AUGs.  They got some good interviews from the Irish but I think the British people are a bit over the top.  I had the feeling that the incident would break down into laughter and the offer of a pint...   :banghead:
