Just found a mention of this site and have spent a good while indulging in nostalgia. And I'm going back for more!

Bloody hell I think I have them all, up to about 1974. My dad collected them for 10 years, and I devoured AW Hall's conversions.

Some of Mr Hall's conversions are still pretty impressive today - and also still the only way to get some of the subjects. (talking about converting, not necessarily the specific method)

And some of the old Chris Ellis conversions are still the only way to get some of the Armour subjects...

I made a Wasp from a Scout, and still have it, but I didn't do it Alan's way.

He suggested using FOUR Airfix Hudson tailwheel struts and FOUR Jet Provost nosewheels for the landing gear! OK for him, he could get them free from Airfix, but what would you do with all the left over bits? 

I used a Caravelle for the wheels and scratchbuilt the struts from styrene.

i hated all the conversions and scratch builds

they were ok IF you could afford plasticard or use two kits to make one

if i  had money it was for A kit OR a sheet of plasticard and if i bought  2 kits I BUILT BOTH

True, some of the methods were a *bit* of a stretch for those without massively deep spares boxes, but they showed what could be done and sometimes thinking of other ways can be part of the fun - and it certainly helps you learn to think outside the box.

I hear you; back in the day I couldn't afford many kits either and 'spares' were for the rich modeller...
- and as for styrene available by the sheet? Only in overseas magazines or my dreams - I had to make do with round plastic trays that had held cheese segments. And which fractured across the radius of the disc, if you weren't careful.

I remember two long running articles, one was converting figures for the "Return of the Light Brigade" or something like that where the builder recreated a painting. The second article I remember was how to build a Mulberry Harbour. Both articles took a couple of years to complete in the magazines.
I might have a look to see which magazines I have.

Back in the day I have to admit I was more into these then the Aircraft ones. Had a whole line-up of special purpose vehicles based on the Churchill.
