The back story can always be adjusted to fit the build to the GB.  For example;

"...following their retirement from front line combat duty the <insert name here> were to be retired.  However government cutbacks saw them being put into service as reconnaissance assets despite their extreme unsuitability for the role."

With respect to ground vehicles, a lot are dual-role: for instance, some 'recce' armoured cars have pretty hefty guns (AML-90...) and have roles including screening, fire-support and flank protection in addition to recce. An M3 Bradley 'recce' vehicle is externally almost indistinguishable from an M2 'fighting' vehicle, including the TOW missiles, sp where do you draw the line?

No, in the case of the UK/Commonwealth an NCO is an adequate crew commander.  Only Europeans and the US reserve that occupation for officers.

Extra points if he is pointing at something off in the distance! ;D

More points if he has an upside-down map spread out on the turret in front of him, and a bored-looking gunner pointedly looking at the birds and saying nothing... :wacko:

How about civilian reconnaissance, such as survey and exploration vehicles?
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Similar question: what about space probes and satellites?

On the one hand, they're definitely 'gathering data' (there's literally a probe around Mars called the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter) but on the other hand, there's no 'enemy' (as far as we know...) to be spying on.

Yep, reconnaissance isn't a purely military term but in doesn't tend to be used in civilian circles.  The principle is the same however, gathering information to determine your strategy.

Thank you, although I think the answer would be interesting to more people than just me.

It strikes me that the role of police helicopters is primarily surveillance.  And then there are the black helicopters Chris favours...

Thunderbird 5 would fit this GB.
