I'm Not Sure what Type of transport would Work or if it would be a Scratch Build! Think it Would Work? What Say You? Thanks for Looking. Dan

Sounds like it would be outside the usual saucer and engines on stalks pattern. Definitely worth exploring!

From listening to the song and reading the history behind the name "Wellerman", I'd say it would be a supply vessel, probably  on the edges of the Federation.  It would probably have a regular route around the smaller colony planets, leaving from either an undisclosed base or a Starbase.  It'd likely be a large vessel - a space-going container ship, highly automated, with a (relatively) small crew, and large shuttles to bring goods to planet surface.

Something to go with it, maybe?  There is/was a British company, Frankenstein and Sons, founded in 1854.  I haven't been able to find out what happened to the company, but in the 1960s they were making flight suits for the RAF.   How about a cargo container with something like FRANKENSTEIN ENVIRONMENTAL  Remember, that's Fronk-en-steen!

I've had an idea for a space cargo ship roughly based on river tug boats pushing barges up and down large rivers. The rear most unit would be massive engines, fuel, a bridge and living quarters for the crew. The rest would be various modules carrying different types of cargo pushed through space from system to system. Just my $0.02.

Kerick, you hit on something.  Think of bundles of 40' cargo containers, perhaps?  Industrial standards tend to stay around for a long time.

Imagine a space faring version of the lowly cargo container. I was struggling with what would a container look like that could reenter an atmosphere and be launched again. I'm probably being too practically minded.

Frankestein and Sons folded apparently in the late 1960s.  Survitec took over their factory and facilities.

Perhaps have the cargo containers moved in an out of Earth's atmosphere via space elevator.  On airless bodies, such as the Moon, railguns would work.
