That surprised me, that the new tram system has no connection with the old routes at all.

Back in the day the old system switched from overhead cable power to the conduit slot in the track at the Swan & Sugar Loaf, which was not only a pub, but a whole area of the town, and the latter system looked like it had THREE rails.

I think the old trams ended just in 1951 just before I came along. The Tram Link system replaced the old Croydon/Wimbledon and Lower Addiscombe/Beckenham rail routes. The New Addington line was the only new route as such. As for the Swan & Sugar Loaf it's always been referred to as The Swan by my generation, marks us out

I recall it always seemed an IMMENSE place, but then I was only small at the time.

Shut 10 years ago or so now Kit, it's a Tescos although you'd still recognise it as they weren't allowed to mess with the exterior. It's known as the Swan and Sugar Loaf Tesco's and the whole area is still known by its name.
