The Wooksta!

Having obtained a second one, this is the revised and redesigned print based on my recommendations having built the test print.

So far, I've just been doing the clean up work and some sanding to get it all to fit, more in some places than others. Hopefully, this thread will help anyone out there who's got one or thinking about it.

No photos yet, I'll be taking them tomorrow before I start putting it together.

Final point. This one is going to be a more developed machine, based on similar steps that English Electric and then BAC took when developing the Lightning.  I'm unsure which fin this will be getting, F1 or F3.

On my side of the planet, this "tomorrow" was yesterday: did you get photos? <_<

Perhaps I had other things to do?

Anyway, having managed to get the photos taken, here we go.

This is approximately what the parts looked like when they arrived.

All the bits following a jolly stiff sanding.  I've still got to sort out the twist in the wings, so boiling water will be deployed tomorrow.

The nost section.  The more observant will note the enlarged cockpit and the cracked fuselage half after an abortive attempt to put in a resin cockpit.

And it's together.  The nosecone is a snug fit, so much so it's holding the outer two pieces together.  Which is nice.

Wing/Fuselage fit.  This took some time and considerable filling to get to this.  It's tricky.

Do you do extras?  Some resin bits as it's going to be a more developed version, plus an IFR probe stolen from a Matchbox Lightning.  The more observant will have noticed that the back end has had the integrally cast fin removed.

After this, I

Indeed.  Said bits should be in the post on Monday.  They'll all cast by then.

Hadn't twigged that there was a twist in the wings, sorry. Would you like a new set posted off to save you the boiling water hassle?

No need to apologise, these things happen. IIRC, that's why I suggested thickening the wings by about a mm, certainly on the trailing edge.  The extra thickness may prevent the warping.

I'll see how I get on first.  I'm always boiling the kettle for a cuppa anyway.

Lovely, all of your Lightning clones. Sorry for being too lazy to comment in every thread.  ;)

Ah, I thought it was to toughen them a bit against chipping. Will keep en eye out in future for the issue as I try and reprint any parts I spot as being iffy

Thickening them against chipping was another reason.

Anyway, I've now got the fuselage together, in between trying to remove my fingers after supergluing them to the nose section.  The fit's generall good, although experience with some of the lesser resin kits will help.  All due respect to Alistair, it's not shake and bake, you do need to sand, test fit, file and sand and test fit again.

I'll try to post some photos later.

As promised, some photos.

Current state of the fuselage.

Awaiting the wings

They dry fit nicely.  This necessitated removing half of teh locating lugs and sanding them down a fair bit.  Still need to take off a bit more on the starboard wing.

Rewind a bit, this is the fuselage with the new late fin.  Cloned from the Whirlibird F3 fin.  You could use another, say Sword or Hasegawa, but the Whirlibird one feels right.

Finally, with a Lightning belly tank. The "Shape" is behind it so I could get the tank in the right place.

I have some bits on order from Fleabay - new exhausts and various intakes for the Lightning but the plan is to use them on another P.8 in the future.  I want a detailed one, with a proper cockpit and an open canopy, whilst I know there are various boarding ladder sets out there too.

The Wooksta!

Just given the fuselage a good sanding to try and pull it all together before filling. I'm going to give it a coat of primer to see precisely what needs filling. The grey resin of the test print was better for this but the clear resin seems to sand better.

The good news is the the belly tank seems to fit better than I'd thought, whilst the resin F3 fin really sets it off.

More photos at the weekend. Perhaps.

Nice to see this coming together.
First up, great work doing all that sanding and not knocking the undercarriage bits off.

All in all it certainly looks like it what it should look like so to both the designer and builder, well done
