Alright, I had ideas that were sprouting into my head in bulk, as did Pyro and KiwiZac, for a seriously upgraded F-111.

Enhance the spine to give it further fuel capacity, give it a hump back running to the dorsal line.  Could also include further avionics, or an avionics package in the EF-111 style tail.  High end F-110 fans off the 15E, with newer, stealthier intakes.  Upgrade the targetting package so as to preclude the use of Pave Tack which would allow the weapons bay to be opened up for use again.  Perhaps give it upgrades even akin to the Silent Eagle, to reduce its RCS.  Enhanced weapons bay size perhaps even, to give it more strike capacity?

Random thoughts here, slowly smashed together one after the other.

Carlos managed to dig up a lost discussion on the FB-111 that was hiding in the WIP/Finished Projects discussion board.  I merged that discussion with the current discussion here on the Hot Topics discussion board so his comment has now lost all significance now that the two discussions are merged.

..... If the 111K acquisition programme had gone ahead, what was the expected 'in operational service' date ?? 1968 ??, 1969 ??, later ??

Thanks in advance, chaps.

Don't know, but given the Australian experience, I'd bet the "actual" in-service date would be a considerable nunber of years after the "expected" in-service date.......

The first two aircraft were in production in jan 1968 so these would have flown mid way through that year. I suspect it would be 1969/1970 before we had enougth to form an OCU and 1071/72 before Squadron service. Add to that the delays caused be the VG issue and its likely to be a couple of years later
