My Tribute to Mike, a return to modelling with a Hurricane Mk.I

I've decided to built a few projects in memory of Mike, although it isn't quite so straight forward. In the last eighteen years I've built a few models, but they have been test assemblies of my own sets and resin kits. In all that time I don't think I have painted a kit, and can honestly say my Iwata airbrush hasn't been used in anger since the 90s. So not only is my tribute to make some models, its also to relearn lost skills and have some fun along the way.

I used to built a lot, but I didn't manage to finish many projects, I would make mistakes and loose interest, over time less projects were started until finally nothing got made. So today was a first, I started a simple kit and actually got my paints out. Whether this kit will make the grade as the first build is questionable, but we will see. My first one is the Airfix fabric wing Hurricane in 1/72. Now I've built this kit before, when I did the cannon armed conversion, but I must have missed a load of parts out, as I don't remember fighting so much to get the wheel bay assembled before sploshing some Tamiya XF-16 on it! Wings are now together, on to the cockpit next.

So its early beginnings, no pics yet. If I progress on this one I will give more information on the scheme, but its a follow up to Mike Hendon RAF Pageant theme, but taking my fabric Hurricane overseas into the Empire.

Wish me luck, and lets see if I can finish something for Mike.

Well done Colin.

That fabric wing Hurricane is a lovely kit, but, as you've discovered, the wheel bay area is a real pain to fit properly. I think Airfix pushed their 'close tolerances' just a bit too far there.  :banghead:
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

When I built mine, see the pic against my name, I found that the parts would hold in place without glue and that was after a swipe or three with a file or sanding stick. Lovely kit other than that.

Welcome back Colin.

And yes the Fabric Wing Mk I is a lovely kit, and yes I have built it with your 20mm gun conversion  ;)
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Thanks for the comments chaps. I'm really enjoying it so far, working on cockpit now. My plan was to finish it in 80 Sqn markings in an Air Policing role in Egypt (based on the Gladiator silver scheme), but might do in camouflage but without toned down markings. That is until I make a mistake and start on something else!

Sounds like a nice kit, I'll have to give it a try.

If it's the new mould 'Cane kit from Airfix, then it is a treat (like their new A-4). I built the fabric wing version, too, a while ago, and IIRC it went together almost without any need for PSR! Very exact and tight fit of everything. I do not remember any trouble with the landing gear, though?

That's because you probably actually read the instructions Thomas.  ;D ;)

Managed to get the airframe assembled last week, took a picture of the cockpit before it will be lost from view which I will try and post soon. Once the glue has set I hope to get some filling and tidying done over the weekend.

Hope you don't mind my putting the picture in the thread rather than just the link.

After getting the wings and fuselage together last month and leaving it a while to set and avoid any ghost seems, this one is not making much progress, so think I might start something a bit more modern and come back to it later.

I can concour withe other guys about the new tool Hurricane.

Dream to build, undercarriage a bit fraught, No PSR to speak of.  Nice kit.
