As the title asks, what colour is RAF "Cockpit Green"?  I am building a WWII aircraft...

It's Aircraft Grey/Green BS381C 283 and lots of companies do a version of it or their "equivalent".

I use Xtracrylic or Hataka nowadays

Humbrol no 78, as a start for your trawling of conversion charts.  ;)

Modelmaster also did the tone (#2062).

I bought what Tamiya label as Cockpit Green (XF71).  It's nice shade, which i'll use on most aircraft, but investigation did reveal that it is apparently specific to one japanese manufacturer only.  Not that I care.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

As an aside; my Dad told me that the Lancasters he worked inside of, were completely primed with Cockpit Green. And that it had a particular smell to it which wasn't unpleasant. Not like the interiors of a few crashed German aircraft which he explored around out of curiosity, he said their primer smell was really horrible.

It is said that in 1948, Rover boss Maurice Wilks bought remaindered stocks of RAF cockpit green to use as cheap paint on the early Landrovers.

Here is a card I made, showing the different paints that I have, that have been used be other modellers on other forums.

That's nice Chris

Of course lots of things can affect how a colour looks even if the same colour is used and we use these affects ourselves. Different shades of grey on different panels prior to spraying over them with the required colour will produce a tonal difference between panels so whether paint is applied directly onto a material, the type of material, different primers if used or another colour and of course the pain manufacturer or even the batch of paint will have an effect.
So basically you pick what you think looks right and go with it unless you have a paint swatch from the real item you are basing your model on.

Thanks all.  Wonderful clues what I should be looking for!

I've heard that too - and I find it credible since Mk. I landrovers used a lot of surplus aircraft aluminum from WWII, so why not RAF paints, too?

When the classic Defender went out of production five years ago, you could still order it painted in a similar tone - the Grasmere green.
