Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Kit

Clearly inspired by The Phantom.

Yes. And I always start clenching when I see figures mounted like that.

Inspired colours.

Pilot attire is appropriate, plus the added feature of the Aviator Top Hat for one of the supernumery crew.
Please tell me the Top Hat dude looks something like Burgess Meredith  ;D

The top hat dude looks more like a Blues Brother than a Penguin.

All will be explained in the back story.

#27
Nieuport-Delage Lévrier

For those who came in late.
The story of the Phantom started with a young sailor named Christopher.
Christopher was born in 1516 in Portsmouth.  His father, also named Christopher, had been a seaman since he was a young boy.
In 1536, when Christopher Jr was 20 years old, he was a part of what was supposed to be his father's last voyage.  On February 17, the ship was attacked by pirates of the Singh Brotherhood in a bay on the coast of Bangalla.  The last thing Christopher saw before he fell into the sea was his father being murdered by a pirate.  Both ships exploded, making Christopher the sole survivor of the attack.  He was washed ashore on a Bangalla beach, seemingly half dead to be found by pygmies of the Bandar tribe, who took care of him.
A time later, Christopher took a walk on the same beach and found the body of the pirate who killed his father.  Allowing the vultures to finish their work, he took up the skull, raised it above his head, and swore a sacred oath:
I swear to devote my life to the destruction of piracy, greed, cruelty, and injustice, in all their forms!  My sons and their sons, shall follow me.
Christopher became the first of what would later be known as The Phantom.  When he died, his son took over for him, and when the 2nd Phantom died, his son took over.  And so it would go on through the centuries, causing people to believe that the Phantom was immortal, giving him nicknames as "The Ghost Who Walks" and "The Man Who Cannot Die".

By the mid 1930's the Nineteenth Phantom, finding he needed to widen his purview, took to the air.  An aircraft, purchased anonymously from the Nieuport-Delage facility in Morristown was registered under the pseudonym of Mr Walker (for the Ghost who Walks) and placed in the care of the Jungle Patrol.

The aircraft in question was a Nieuport-Delage Lévrier (Greyhound).  A three seat low wing monoplane of tubular steel construction powered by a Lorraine-Dietrich 'W' engine.  It was used by The Phantom to patrol off the coast of Bangalla when his sources informed him pirates were in the area, as well as for other purposes when it was required.  It is depicted transporting a senior member of Bangalla's judiciary, escorted by a member of the Jungle Patrol, from Morristown to Bengalitown for the trial and execution of pirates arrested by The Phantom.

The Phantom continued to use the Lévrier up until the point Bangalla was swept up into the Second World War at which time it was lost amongst the chaos that ensued.  It's current whereabouts is unknown but it is possible it is tucked away at the back of a hanger somewhere.  A replica (the last flying example) exists at the Dadswell Bridge People's Aviation Museum in the PDRV.

The Model.
A fairly simple wing and tail swap - Fuselage from Hasegawa Kawanishi Type 94 fitted with wings and horizontal tails from Hasegawa Mitsubishi Ki-15.
What makes this for me is the lovely shape of the cowling over that W engine.
Finished with Tamiya fine surface primer (white on the wings), Vallejo Acrylics, and home made transfers.
