Progress report.

Having built new engine mounts, steering tie rod, and anti-roll bar to miss the small block chevy (sump lump is at the other end to the stock Ford donk) I painted the chassis today.
Next I have to make a decision.  Keep it as a four seater or, taking a cue from the Monkeemobile do I cut out the boot lid and scratch up additional seating?

Could always go down the Beverly Hillbillies route and add a raised platform for the extra seats
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Or for the Pirate Chief's rocking chair...

No, I want to have a go at building a convertible "up-top" from wire hoops and PVA soaked tissue paper and one that cleared a raised platform would be rather odd looking.

You could still open up the boot as well (have to have somewhere to mount the cannon for those pesky tailgaters/revenue patrol cars*) and have the canvas top more like a sunshade or awning.

*that's an idea for a companion piece, right there... you're welcome! ;D

zenrat

There is the small matter of the lack of a 1/25 naval cannon...

I've dropped the plan to add a third row of seats.  In order to accomodate this the Pontiac the Monkeemobile was based on was lengthened.  I don't want to get into the work this would involve on this model (not without getting another kit as a body donor anyway) and if I leave it stock length there is no leg room for the back row due to the chassis hump over the rear axle.
So, standard seating configuration but I still want to build a wire and sticky tissue convertible top.
I am on leave until May 2nd so hopefully much progress will be made.

Not saying it has to be any bigger than a swivel gun, just something to discourage pursuit.

A length of plastic tube, suitably dressed up, would work there.

And the rear seat could sit higher, to allow enough leg room?
Or it could face backwards, which would make operating the rear-facing gun easier. Plenty of leg room in that boot.

Convert it to FWD and use an Olds Toronado drive train?

Have you seen the prices 1/25 ToroNandos kits go for?

I do have the complete engine/transmission/suspension from an AMT Chevy Citation.  I was going to use it to build a "right way round" three wheeler but thinking about it transplanting it into a classic Ford is a much better idea.  Maybe I should put it into a sixties Mustang.  That would be wrong on so many levels - Chevy in a Ford, FWD Mustang, V6 Mustang, and I am sure there are other offences I haven't thought of.

Too late now to modify the Pirate Car as I would like to finish it by the Ballarat NNL on May 15th.

So, per ardua ad astra.  Today I finished body prep and put on its first lick of primer.  You will see the holes for the exhausts and that the Pirates have removed all the body side trim but not filled the mounting holes.

Actually I've never seen a Toronado kit at all, but wish I had.

Your build looks pretty promising anyway.

The Pink Panther car had a Toronado power pack.

The 1/25 kit of that is even harder to get hold of.

I think the Californian may just have been repopped by Round Two.

Speaking of cannon, I can't remember the name of it but many ships carried really small cannons that were really just big shotguns. Maybe a little scale o rama?

Sounds like a Carronade or a Swivel gun to me.

It must be the swivel gun I was thinking of!
