That is tremendous work. My favourite sci-fi/fantasy series.

I've read all the books a couple of times and have most in both hardback and paperback. I know that sounds daft, but I have, what is to me at least, a perfectly logical reason for having them  ;). I attended all of the Discworld Conferences whilst Terry was alive and had the great pleasure of meeting him many times. On one occasion me and my mate spent most of the afternoon chatting with him in the hotel bar. It's a long story, some of the lads know it as I've probably bored them with it enough  ;), but a bit long winded for here. However I do feel Terry would of absolutely adored your depiction of his world

That's definitely a dit to hear. Very jealous!

Most depictions seem to have the elephants facing outwards. But there are other solutions too. They might get bored always facing the same way, or even always standing.

And earthquakes could be explained by the Elephants changing direction when bored

Other sundry tectonic noises are probably due to the elephants passing flatus.

Have you ever heard an elephant break wind?

Little sister and I still have a giggle remembering a visit to London Zoo about 50 years ago.  Alison, being the off-the-wall thinker she still is, timed the pachydermatous eruption as 36 continuous seconds and still describes it as sounding like a large motor cycle revving its engine two feet from the listener.

One time at Melbourne zoo the lady elephant was in heat and, despite being in a separate paddock the bull could smell her and had the (very) obvious physical reaction.
A group of three smirking teenage girls stood there sending photos to their boyfriends while a young lady teacher escorted a group of giggling eight year olds past with a sharp "yes, yes, come along children.  We can all see the elephant's penis..."

I just felt very inadequate.

Yes, and my niece, who was 7 or so at the time, looked at me and with a giggle said "was that you uncle Chris ?". Apparently I have a reputation

You should try one. Here, libraries have them. Surely any major bookstores too. Or Amazon.

Gondor

Never read any Disc World books either, seen bits of cartoons and live action stuff on the tv. I fully intend to get all the books and read through them, looking forward to Death joining the Foreign Legion. I am currently trying to get some Culture into my head

I've seen movies and TV of DW, not any books, either, but I'm sure I could find some.

You can read any of the Discworld series as a stand alone novel or start from the beginning with the Colour of Magic, it doesn't make much difference. I started with Guards ! Guards ! and then was hooked so went back to the beginning  The only thing you notice is that the books get considerably "thicker" as the series moves on. ;D

A great stand alone read is Good Omens which Terry wrote with Neil Gaiman, and is a book I've read again and again

Good Omens is not Discworld, but the attitudes and fun are there.

... Or you could pick a central character and follow the career. City Watch, Tiffany Aching, or Moist von Lipwig, for example.

I read a bunch of them in random order (from the library), then bought the whole set to read in chronological order. I liked being able to see the Discworld and its inhabitants grow from one book to the next.

Mossie

Great stuff!  I never quite got into Discworld (read a later one and started another) but I think I need to revisit it.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Wardukw

If i ever read a Discworld book it will have to come from over seas as theres none here..i did a wee search and came back with less than jack ...guess the books never quite took off here ..not surprising really when most ppl here are nuts about computer games and freaking sports.

Online stores in NZ mainly seem to quote pretty long shipping times. Not in stock but they can get the books.

Also, googling for discworld new zealand library finds a couple of library websites with many titles. They could be at a library near you.
