I was thinking today about just how noisy that cockpit must have been; with a whopping great centrifugal turbine roaring away just in front of it...

Not to mention the second one behind the cockpit.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

It's kind of an enlarged MiG-15 with another Klimov VK-1 (unlicenced RR Nene development) stuck in front of the cockpit

I'd patent that shape mate before Pixar see it  ;) ;D Especially from head on

Both look very nice, and that cutting matt is way too clean. I do have a cleaner cutting matt, only because it's still in its wrapper  ;D

Thanks, Gondor!

The cutting mat is a spare that I pull out to take photo's on. The others are much more ... characterful. ;)

Several rounds of PSR later & I think I'm nearing the end.

I've lost quite a bit of the panel detail in certain areas, so I'll probably need to do a bit of work to fix that up, then I'll post pic's when the final primer coats are on.

Just because I want to in-service them with a less common user;

Does anyone know the colours used on the Finnish Drakens?

Or, would my SMS paints Camo Green and Forest Green* with US Medium Grey** undersides suffice?

Or I could try to get some Dark Green G4 or I have Foliage Green in the Paint Stash, but I don't think that last is a good match for anything.

[*: My bottle of Forest Green looks significantly darker than the image.]

[**: My bottle of US Medium Grey is somewhat less "blue" than the image.]

The Finnish aircraft used the same colors as the Swedish AF Drakens, "Mörk olivgrön 328" and "Mörkblå 438"; FS 34064 and 35042 are supposed to be suitable tones, but weathering and sun-bleaching dramatically changed these murky tones into "something else". Personally, I prefer Humbrol 77 and 163 these days as obverall lighter guesstimates (the original Swedish tones are/were very dark with low contrast!), but there's much room for personal interpretation (and weathering!).

The undersides were IIRC painted in a tone called "Blågrå (Blue Gray); FS 35237 (e.g. Humbrol 145) is supposed to come close, Humbrol 82 (Steel Grey) might be an option, too, or even RAF Medium Sea Grey, since the color appears pretty light on real-world aircraft.

However, the Drakens' paint scheme was quite unique among Finnish aircraft and rather a "Swedish export solution". More "common" would have be the green/dark olive drab seen on the MiG-21s or BAe Hawks. Esp. the MiGs sported a wide variety of shades, because they were delivered in Finnish camouflage using Soviet paints and later re-painted with domestic material (the dark olive tone was actually a very dark brown!).

Thanks, Dizzy!

Not sure it helps much, as I'm going to be using paints I'm familiar with & which airbrush well (so, either Tamiya or the local brand, SMS), but it gives me somewhere to start.

The Camo Green is the Australian Army colour & is a quite brown olive colour, which I think will substitute fairly well for the Finnish dark olive colour.

I may look in at the hobby shop near work (I'm out of isolation as of midnight, about 100 minutes ago) tomorrow this afternoon & see if they have the Dark Green G4 (a British AFV colour), as that looks dark enough & tonally similar, if not then the Forest Green (which is sort of pine needle-ish in hue) will have to do.

The blue is basically USN Dark Sea Blue (the late WWII tone), so it should be easily available from various companies. The green is the same as used on Belgian Mirage V fighter bombers - that's a bit more difficult, but it's available as acrylic paint from AK, Vallejo or Hataka. The blue grey underneath is also a common modern USN tone. But - after all - I'd freely interpret the colors and rather go after the overall visual impression.

Old Wombat

Thanks for understanding, Dizzy!

I've settled on the Dark Green G4 (British WW2 AFV) colour , US Olive Drab (which is darker & slightly browner than the swatch on my screen), which I found when buying the G4 today, & the US Medium Grey undersides.

They may not be the precise colours but they fit the regional camouflage profile & I may do a partial "whitewash" over-paint pattern, too ..... MAY!

So, that's one sorted! ;D

I think the other is going to be a little more ... shiny! ;)
