Wakishashi Rettan

Designed to be fired at B-29s from ground by a modified 1/2 scale V-2 rocket, the Japanese were forced to redesign the project when the U-boat carrying the booster plans was sunk on its' way to Japan. Realising they had been having great success with high altitude flight in their Fu-Go Balloon Bomb program, the scientists adapted the manned missile (Named Ginsu) for a slightly different launch procedure: They were to be dropped from ABOVE the B-29 stream by balloon and fire their rockets to achieve a near supersonic airspeed. The name Rettan was chosen as it was Natter backwards, since it was more or less the reverse of the Natter concept. A major difference was that the Rettan was designed to be a reusable Kamikazi aircraft, the pilot's section punching through the B-29 while the tail section stayed behind. Packed with explosives, the tail would detonate and blow the Superfortress out of the sky.
Of 48 launched, only one was to make contact with the enemy (the rest presumably drifting off course and being lost out to sea). The one that did attack achieved only partial success. It punched right through the B-29 named "Bill's Tin Can" and lodged in another B-29. The nose section failed to detach, and the pilot, now inside of "Ripe Tamatas" was flown back to Tinian and held captive. The concept however did prove you can slice open a Tin Can and still cut a Ripe Tamata with a Ginsu!
