As the war progressed and the skies over Europe began to fill with Allied aircraft, the RAF were looking for a long range fighter to patrol and do fighter and ground attack sweeps.
It had been hoped that the new Typhoon and Tempest would take these roles, but continued issues with the Napier Sabre engine caused significant delays.
Having tested versions of the P-38 Lightning earlier in the war, it was decided to have another look. They had been rejected because the Air Minstry insisted on having the engines rotate the same way, for commonality with the P-40. On top of that, the US refused to fit them with turbo-superchargers, as it was a new, and secret technology.
Combined, this made the P-38 underpowered above 15'000ft and dangerous to fly, as it tried to pull to one side.
Having learned their lesson, they ordered a version somewhere between the F and G. Usually fitted with extreme long range tanks, these heavily armed fighters wreaked havoc ....
