Quote from: PR19_Kit on January 13, 2023, 06:51:44 AMTo show how little I know about AFVs, the turret on the left hand one looks just like one I scratchbuilt to go on top of an Airfix Buffalo, and that is an LVTP-5 isn't it? I modelled it after an article in Airfix mag in the late 60s, and until now it was the ONLY AFV I'd ever built.  :o

Somewhere I still have it too, amazing.

No, the left hand one is the standard Saracen turret used on most Ferrets after the Mk.1. The US turret is the rounded cast one with oval vision blocks.

The LVTP-5 wasn't the Buffalo, it was this absolute behemoth: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LVTP-5

Nearly 30 feet long, over 11 feet wide, 3 crew plus 34 dismounts... :o

Not only could it float, it could do it with a 105mm howitzer turret on top too:

The present LVTP-7s are about a third smaller (21 dismounts) but about a third faster in the water.

Wasn't the biggest amohibous vehicle the yankee Marines had,  the BARC - Barge Amphibious Resupply Cargo was.

Ye Gods, calling that thing a 'lighter' is patently ridiculous, it weighs 100 tons!  :o

There's quite a good vid of one landing a cement mixer on a beach and picking it up again at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCOwMmkP-94

   to Harold for the sheer amount of info.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

NARSES2

I can remember lighters in use on the Thames, they weren't quite that big though  ;D

To my mind a lighter is simply a unpowered vessel that needs to be towed (or pushed). No idea if that's the correct definition, but it's what I used to see all the time.
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Cambridge Dictionary states Lighter: noun; concrete:  a low, open boat used to move goods to and from ships in a harbour:  Oxford English Dictionary gives the same definition, adding  usually unpowered  So I'd say you got it dead right, Chris
