Mesdames et Messieurs, I present to you le Démon de l'aeronavale. In 1952 the French Navy were introducing the De Havilland Sea Venom into carrier service, renamed as Aquilon. It quickly became obvious that the Aquilon needed a decent radar as well as carrying a good weapons loadout.

The Suez Crisis in 1956 made the point to the French authorities that they needed new and better aircraft for the Aeronavale. As it happened some French pilots had spent time on USN carriers and suggested the new McDonnell F3H Demon that was entering service.
In 1957 the order was placed with McDonnell for 36 Demons, these were all delivered and in service by 1960. The US was happy to pay most of the costs under the Mutual Development Assistance Program and agreed to host French pilots for training on the new aircraft.

The F3H served France adequately until 1970. By this time the shortcomings of the Demon were obvious and it was decided to withdraw them from service. The aircraft you see here is wearing the early USN colour scheme adapted for French style.
