Back in the day I would do very similar to what Gondor suggests, but rather than masking I would use one of those rulers/guides that has a series of circular templates on it. Paint the nose of  the bomb yellow or whatever was needed, then stick the bomb through a hole and paint the main body dark green, then stick it through a smaller hole and paint the nose cone, if that makes sense ? Took a bit of figuring sizes to start with, but once done was relative easy on a production line basis.

Quote from: Old Wombat on April 23, 2023, 04:28:34 AMAnyway, I fitted the prop's into the nacelles yesterday, to check their fit before gluing them in, & I really have to say that Airfix were extremely intelligent with the construction of the Typhoon IB (Kit #A02041, if you're interested).

First up: The parts that I've put together for both the Winchester build & the paint monkey fit extremely well &, if you intend building it OoB (or just doing a markings/scheme whif), then you should really enjoy building it; but

Secondly (& most importantly): The propeller & shaft fit on a little drum/cylinder-like part which just slips into place without the need for glue, which means that, should you be transporting it to a show or similar, then all you need to do is pull out the cylinder & pack it flat on some foam to avoid having the propeller damaged in transit, then slot it back into place to display it.

That one tiny little detail is a minor stroke of genius! Well done, Airfix!

The Typhoon was one of the first "new" kits Airfix produced after their latest re-incarnation, and whilst not on a par with their latest was certainly a major step forward from previous kit. I particularly like the ability to show the guns ammunition feeds

Strangely Chris I was looking at circular templates at my fav art supply store Gordon Harris .
They had 5 different sizes with a couple having very small sizes..I didn't get one cause I couldn't remember which one I had

Bombs are stalling progress on this & frustrating me rather a lot (he says holding back what he really wants to write) but I think I may have found a way forward.

However, I'm too tired tonight (Dawn Service today yesterday, so not much sleep) & I have a doctor's appointment before work tomorrow today, so maybe tonight.

Build is still being delayed by infuriating bomb painting issues. If this keeps up I'm going for a closed bomb bay! :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

What sort of bombs are they mate ?? 500 pounders or 1000 cause depending on the type you can leave em one colour .
GP bombs I've seen have been just dark green..olive drab ..APHE I've seen with white..blue..orange painted lines .
Also cause a heap if pics are quite deceptive those bands are no where as perfect as you think..the bomb casings are normally quite nicely painted but the bands are painted by hand just to show what's in em ...Torpex..RDX..Amatol and so on .
So your lines don't have to be perfect by and means matey ..fact they would look more accurate if they weren't

Bomb load will be 8 x 500lb SAP, 4 x 1,000lb GP & 1 x 4,000lb HC (12.000lb total).

The 4,000lb cookie was no problem at all (nice round cylinder).

1,000lb-ers are (now) OK, still have the light green ring to paint but that's easy.

500lb-ers have been re-painted & the method used successfully on the 1,000lb-ers should work for these.

The biggest issue is the red & white 1/2" lines right next to each other (touching, in fact) on the nose of the SAP 500lb-ers..

Got to go to work, so I'll probably finish masking tonight & paint tomorrow morning.

The victory over the 1,000lb-ers has lifted my spirits, somewhat. So feeling more positive.

OK ya can cheat here ..well not cheat but ya can change colours ..if your bombs are loaded with TNT..Torpex and so follow this list.

All live bombs Dark Green;
Fillings; Amatol, Bararol & T.N.T. 1 inch Light Grey band.

H.E. = 1/2 inch bright Red band at nose.

S.A.P. = 1/2 inch White band above Red band

A.P. = 1/2 inch White band each side of Red band.

All live bombs and rockets carry a 1/2 inch Light Green band below any of the above combination, it does NOT replace them.
So if ya changed your type of bomb from Semi armour piercing bombs to HE then just a red nose ..could make a life way better  ;D

Normally I'd agree with you, Lee, but this is one of those occasional builds where I've really wanted to do the bomb load from the moment I started it.

We'll have none of this "cheating" business here, young man! :o

My sources say a light green band either 1" or 2", depending on the bomb type, with the explosive type stencilled in the band 3 or 4 times around the bomb, no mention of grey bands, & they were official documents from 1948 related to bomb disposal.

Another source gave bomb load-outs & their code names & targets: SAP bombs were often used when attacking factories & other industrial sites in conjunction with a HC bomb & either GP bombs or Incendiary devices.

My load-out doesn't quite fit any of the actual loads but is fairly close to the "Usual" load-out for Lancasters, so I'm calling it the Winchester's "Unusual" bomb-load. ;)

TBH, I think it's too big a load. Manchester was marginally underpowered and I've a feeling this would be too.

As a side note, I located a Manchester conversion I'd forgotten about, which fits directly onto the 1979 tool Lancaster, although I may well use a Dambuster one sans mid upper and give it the nose and tail fairings from a Lancastrian. Oh, and Centaurus engines.

OK this seems to be info from all over the place as the list I wrote down is the official WW2 RAF aircraft bombs identification list from I think 1941 or 42 .
The list you've got is from 1948 ..did they change ? ..ive know idea ..they might have.
I didn't even bother looking at the US list as that's completely different again I bet  ;D
