Lots of progress on the 588 over the last few days, mainly because I can't waste any time oggling the Interweb as I don't have a proper working laptop.  :banghead:

This borrowed one doesn't have any graphics software so I can't show any pics just now though.

All the little fiddly bit of the cockpit are now in place and it's primed ready for painting, supposing I can figure out which of the umpteen RLM colours to use. The port wing assembly is complete, yes, really. I had to chop the wing in half outboard of the outer engine, and it was a case of supergluing it all back together once the angles of the cut edges had been filed (HEAVILY filed.....) so that it matched.

The inboard engine has been chopped and glued around the 'hatch' I mentioned previously that I'd cut for the main gear, and that's almost ready for some PSR work, except I forgot to bring any putty with me. :banghead:  One way or another that problem will be solved in a few days though.

Hopefully there'll be some pics posted before long too.

Cockpit should be RLM 66 post 1942.  Extra Dark Sea Grey is a good substitute.  Has the right blue shade, it just that bit lighter.

Great, thanks Lee, I even have some of that RLM 66 I think.

Here's the pics, so it really HAS happened.  ;)

The outboard engine casting strapped in place while the superglue cures. It only took 4 attempts before it set-off properly...............

And here's the first attempt at attaching the inboard engine with the 'hatch' carved out of the upper wing surface.

That didn't work worth a light, in fact the wing nearly snapped in half at the inner edge of the 'hatch', so my 2nd attempt used the front end of the engine itself to strengthen the joint and that worked a treat. Together with lots of superglue.......................

And here's the cockpit. It's quite nicely detailed but the very devil to work on as it's so narrow. The wooden twig thing sticking up at the back is the gun sighting periscope, made from a cocktail stick in this case as Huma don't include it in the kit, and it's pretty obvious in any view of the Ju 288 cockpit. Note that the aft  bulkhead doesn't fit the inner profile of the fuselage, and will need some PSR when the putty arrives, but that's common with all the bulkheads, NONE of them fit!

I had to make the control wheel from 5 amp fuse wire as the Carpet Monster gobbled the plastic one.  :banghead:

By now the cockpit interior has two coats of RLM 66, but will need at least one more.

I had every intention to get it finished and released, but it lacks most of the interior, bomb bay, and no undercarriage whatsoever! One day, maybe...

Colin

I assume that came from Justin Gorka?  I did some work on it for him but never got the chance to finish it before having to return it.  Did you get any of the other ex-Toad masters he held?

No, I got them from Peter Long, I was introduced to him at the Farnborough model show probably ten years ago by Mike McEvoy. I got as far as making copies in grey resin (as the wings were slightly 'sticky' from uncured resin. That was the only one he offered me, as it was unreleased. I don't think he had any other original masters left.

The cockpit of the 588 is all painted now, at least as much as it's going to be anyway. Most of it is done in RLM66, but as my Hataka 66 seems to need a zillion coats to get decent coverage, some parts are in ESDG. I can't see the difference, and when the canopy's on, neither will you.

As it all dried semi-gloss I gave the whole nose a spray coat of matt varnish and now that's dried nicely I'll put the canopy in place.

I've a feeling what you got was a test shot, as you say the wing was sticky from uncured resin.  The one I worked on was shaped layered plastic card.  I've done similar myself - do a blank master and work on a resin copy, so if I cocked up I had a reset button.

I have some dim recollection of a show report (Southern Expo?) that mention Toad having test shots for their forthcoming Ju 288.

Some of the Toad moulds/masters went to Dennis Ives, Justin Gorka got the rest, some of them going to Glenn Ashley around 1999.

More progress on the 588, the canopy's glued in place and masked off prior to more priming and PSR stuff, and it looks more like a Junkers now. Note the missing cannon on the upper gun turret, but I have some brass replacements from Master for them.

LOTS more PSR on the wing, most of it on the underside, but a fair amount on top too, plus a primer coat to see how much more PSR I'll need, and it's a LOT. :(

Those of you who have been watching closely won't have missed that the Privateer wing I'm using for the 588 has a socking great hole between the engines where the B-24 type landing gear retracted. I'd been steadily ignoring this for a while, but now it was time to fill it in somehow. I was thinking of cutting the hole square and fitting some styrene sheet in there, but after I'd filed the slight fairing that sits just aft of the hole I found I'd filed clean through the lower surface of the wing. :(

So I decided to 'sheet it in', an old flying models trick, and I cut a slice of styrene that fitted as well as possible in the gap, using the engines from the other, un-assembled wing as patterns, and glued it in place.

RESULT!

It works pretty well and with a bit of PSR no-one will know it's not part of the wing, except you lot of course.

Here's the hole and the slice of styrene.

And here it is all glued and PSR'd up.

And yes, I DID cut another shape for the other wing which I have yet to build...............  ;)

No, I didn't? IIRC I posted a pic from a friend's build, based on two Ju 188s, many moons ago? But that was not originally mine.

Multi engined Junkers are a fav 😍
This one is most interesting Kit ..can't wait for the end result...after a absolute crap of PSR that is  :o

That's a good work-around, Kit - I'll have to remember that one. Thanks.
