This is one basic way of putting your what-if photo on an old box.... in this case a Matchbox box, the same can be done with 70s style Airfix boxes etc.

Take a photo of an old box, straight-on from above.... open in Photoshop

open your photo of your model (one with space around for putting type & logos)...

copy your model photo and paste it over the box photo and make your model photo 50% opacity so you can then see the box underneath....

select your model photo and using transform-scale (holding down shift to keep the image in proportion) make your model pic fit the size of the box with a little overlap

Using the polgonal lasso tool (on your model photo) trace the edge of the box image all the way round to create one highlighted box, select inverse, then feather by 1 pixel (this is optional but softens a hard edge) select cut or press delete. This places your model photo exactly over the box image.

next,  to place the logo and other elements go back to the box photo layer and using the rectangular marquee tool draw a box around the matchbox logo, copy and paste into a new layer

Using the Magic wand tool with 50% tolerance, select the blue area around the matchbox logo and then select cut or press delete.
For the circular 3 colour kit logo change the rectangular marquee tool to eliptical using guide lines to help draw a circle around it, copy (then feather 1 pixel) & paste into a new layer

To put in the what-if kit model title select the "T"  type tool and click next to the scale kit logo. Then type in the title, highlight it then select the font you want to use and the size and the colour

That looks VERY comprehensive, thanks so much.

I'll try and translate the PS actions into PSP, but it'' take a while I'm sure.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

An excellent tutorial,  very clear and concise.  .   However, I'm still going to sit back and let those who are more 'computerate' than me produce images to astound me.

Only downside of course is, the prohibitive cost of photoshop.

There are ways around that.  Allegedly.

Paint (dot) net is a pretty useful (and powerful) Photoshop-lite, especially if you want to practice some of the techniques Vostoc showed here.  Best part about it is that it's FREE.  I use it for all my Star Trek, Shipbucket and non-Shipbucket profiles, and even for touching up some of my renders.

There's also GIMP, which is more powerful than Paint dot net. And also free

GIMP is highly recommended, very powerful for being free. I use it (among others) to retouche and fine-tune my pictures.

Arrrrrr, matey.

Indeed.  Last copy of Photoshop i had I got from Long John Les the friendly office software and movie pirate.
That was a lot of operating systems (and a lot of jobs) ago but as I still have a functioning "fruit" iMac I could probably still run it.
Long John Les ended up getting fired for burning pirated software and movies onto DVDs at work (order when you got in and he'd have a nice warm disc ready for you by going home time).
