Need data for WW2 Allied jet engines, please

Hi, all.

I am currently hacking about a P-47 Thunderbolt to be a jet version, and I need answers to a few questions, please.

What sort of thrust/power did the jet engines of the time have, compared to the standard R-2800 powerplant?
Would a single jet engine have given comparable power, or would two have been better?

Further to that, were there any other engines available at the time (say 1945 - 47) with a smaller diameter than the Welland? The unit is quite rotund, and I'm not sure two would fit where the keel of the P-47 was.

IIRC, the first axial flow engine in the USA was the Westinghouse J34 with ~3,000 lbf thrust, applied to the F2H Banshee which flew in 1947 for the first time - with two of them. That would probably be the most probable choice, even though it was a Navy powerplant. The USAF had at the same time the General Electric/Allison J35 for the F-86 with a little more output (3,820 lbf).
