Coming home from a job the other day I thought I'd tale the river road. Saw this little US Coastie pulling a nice wake

Also saw that they are tearing down the old coal fired electric plant. Who wants affordable energy anyway

Don't normally do ship spotting but, just occasionally...........................!!! Liner is the Royal Princess moored off Hawes Pier, South Queensferry last Thursday. The tanker was moored at Hound Point - Dalmeny (same day). Other photos were taken from my balcony. Living 10 floors up DOES sometimes have an advantage!!

Aagghhh, the Forth Bridge! The hours I've spent up there...........

Love the tanker with the loading platform. Almost looked like WWII camo at first ! Cool bridge as well. Thanks for sharing !

You're welcome. Glad you like them. That is the Forth Railway Bridge. World's second longest single cantilever span & just had its 125th birthday this year. I can actually see all three Forth Bridges from my flat. The tanker loading platform is also visible from my flat. Not unusual to see a queue of tankers lined up along the river waiting to load.

Hell no, that was for the painting team guys.

We were testing it in early 1970 to see if it would withstand 25 ton axle load wagons. What a waste of time and money it was, they could strip off around 60% of the structure and it would STILL stand up and carry trains! IIRC it weighed over 85000 tons!  :o

But you can't see the fourth?

I'll get me coat...

Watching the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries on TV last night this was heavily featured.

Beautiful.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

<_< <_< I'm no engineer but I have heard those in the know saying that the bridge is actually about three times as strong as it needs to be! Seriously over engineered by current standards but, they did not have the benefit of computers etc in 1890! Which makes it all the more remarkable an achievement. Regardless of the actual engineering involved, I still think it is a truly magnificent sight.

Which reminds one of the old joke about the young Navy Captain who was told to proceed with his ship to Rosyth Naval Dockyard, and drop anchor under the Forth bridge.

He ran aground at Kincardine!

That's correct, it is, but it was built after all the railway bridge engineers had caught a cold when the Tay Bridge collapsed in 1879 taking a train with it and killing everyone on board. As a result almost every bridge built after that was WELL over-engineered.

That simply means that the young Navy Captain was not very good at navigating as the river is still navigable at that point.
