I was a litttle confused as the Holyhock arrived painted black, and I thought she was an icebreaker. More of a navaids tende with secondary icebreaking ability.

The new Mackinaw. I assume she's red to honour the old Mack ?

I always thought the dedicated icebreakers for the USCG were painted red, but I could be mistaken.

I seem to remember she was sent to the St. Claire River to help with the ice that accumulated on it.  Lake St. Claire was down 6 inches last month due to ice dams on the river.

The Detroit News had some pics today of the ice breaking operations on the St. Claire River today.  Pictured are the USCGC Mackinaw, USCGC Bristol Bay and CCGC Samuel Risley.

Why is the river in the foreground frozen and the large expanse of water in the background not so? Looks very odd........

It's all the ice coming down the St.Clair river from Lake Huron. Most of the smaller waterways have already thawed.

OK, thanks. I'm glad there's a rational explanation.

Thank goodness we don't have that problem on the Severn, just LOTS of water every day! We have the second highest tide rise and fall in the world, 30 ft plus.

Of course the highest tide rise and fall is in Canada, the Bay of Fundy apparently. Do they have ice there too?

On the way home from work today, I spotted a warship in Weymouth bay, so I stopped to have a look. Turned out to be a Type 42 destroyer - quite a rare beast these days.

Saw something slightly unusual while driving down the Riverside in Norwich, TS Lord Nelson ,a training ship for the Sea Cadets.  Basically a hull & superstructure with basic equipment.

Busy day in Portland harbour yesterday. three RFA ships were in port - a Fort Rosalie-class, a Rover-class and Wave Knight were all there.

Are you staying in the Renaissance?  That's about the only hotel in that spot where one could get such a shot.  I've gotten similar views (from lower elevations) crossing the Elizabeth on one of the ferries.  I never thought I'd miss that stretch of waterfront so much.

2 RCN MCDVs came thru Sarnia today, HMCS Moncton and HMCS Summerside. They are heading down to Chicago to take part in the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Let'a just hope they only load blanks in the ceremonial 6 pounders !
