Much like their rocket program. It wasted their resources and didn't really change the course of the war.

Again, true.
Though it did help 'bootstrap' the US space programme.

The October configuration made me think of tanks like the Abrams, Challenger etc.
Scaleorama of a 1/72nd scale Abrams to 1/350th gives a vehicle with the "real world"
dimensions of a width of 58.33 ft. and 126.4 ft. long. Turret race diameter of 34.433 ft.
Interestingly enough the diameter of the "trunk" of the USS Iowa class 16" turrets is
35ft. 1 inch.

Scaleorama of a 1/72nd scale Churchill gives "real world" dimensions of a width 52.25 ft.
and a length of 123.96 ft.

I don't have any BB turrets available or I would be more tempted to try this. One wild whiff!

Unless someone has spares laying around? I live about 40 miles south of Chicago.

Quote from: Old Wombat on December 30, 2024, 12:21:55 AMI have a feeling that a 1/35 Churchill tank might suit what you're after.

The hull might (will) need a bit of re-working but the numerous small road wheels would work & the track is, for the scale, fairly narrow.

I don't have instant access to my Mk.VII right now, for getting accurate measurements, but I'm fairly sure it'd do the trick.

Exactly this. When you look at all super-sized tracked vehicles, they have a large number of normal-sized wheels rather than a few big ones. The reason isn't hard to fathom: changing a 3-foot diameter wheel by hand is pretty much the same, whether it comes from a 30-ton vehicle or a 300-ton vehicle. Changing a 9-foot diameter wheel however... yeech. You only drop that on yourself once...

Also, as Jon said, changing a length of continuous track on one of these monsters would be a nightmare: better to have multiple track units, both lengthways and widthways, although changing inner/middle track would be "interesting".

Bit of a tangent, but speaking of multiple track units, I've often wondered about a WWII "Ogre", with two Sherman turrets, six Stuart turrets, two Calliope rocket launchers and lots and lots of tracks...

By any chance would you be coming to the Mad City Modelers contest in Madison on March 15th? I could give you a spare 16" gun turret then. If not, maybe I could mail one to you next year?
Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

Nope. I'm not that cool. But I do play the music a lot.

I don't know about the contest. Mail might be better. No rush. I have plenty of projects in line.
