My build of Freightdog's excellent 1/72 Avro 720 has found it's way back onto my workbench after languishing on the shelf of doom for quite some time. Having decided to actually try and finish it, my thoughts have turned to armament - Colin's model comes equipped with a nice pair of Firestreak missiles, but I was wondering whether a pair of Fireflash missiles would work as an alternative?

I know that the Firestreaks are infra-red homing missiles, whilst the Fireflash is a beam-riding one - would the nose of the Avro 730 have enough room for all the "gubbins" associated with guiding the Fireflash to the target?

Over to the collective for your thoughts

Scab some clear nose cones off the Firestreaks onto the Fireflashes and you have an IR Fireflash.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

It's doubtful as the 720 and the SR.53 both had the same problem, they were so small that installing radar ranging, or intercept radars, would be problematic. This is why the proposed production 720 and SR.177 were so much larger.
Fireflash was weird in that the boosters only fired for 1.5 seconds and then the centre body with the warhead and control system "coasted" to the target, losing speed the entire time. The range was only 1,9 miles. If you were getting that close, you may as well fire a salvo of Mighty Mouse rockets.
;D
The Firestreak itself had the problem that the missile electronics required cooling. A cooling system that used ammonia was installed in the aircraft that used the Firestreak. Where they'd have been able to install the tanks, pumps and piping for the cooling system would be a challenge with the 720.
