As the hulks were dismasted/derigged, you could have the rig changed from square to fore-and-aft when they are put back into service.

A topsail schooner rig or a bermuda rig. Either would improve performance under sail, especially in terms of manouvering.

Dad always reckoned it's top speed could best be described as "making sedate progress". He didn't actualy say that, but being a Moderator I can't actualy say what he did say

My late godfather (an RN yeoman of signals at the Tobermorey "work up" base  in 1940) used to say Flower class corvettes would roll on a damp towel, and were ideal for waters no rougher than the Manchester Ship Canal..

In maritime terms it's used in reference to size rather than speed.

Not necessarily size either. A role is more like it.

From Wikipedia:
The modern roles that a corvette fulfills include coastal patrol craft, missile boat and fast attack craft. These corvettes are typically between 500 and 2,000 tons. Recent designs of corvettes may approach 3,000 tons and include a hangar to accommodate a helicopter, having size and capabilities that overlap with smaller frigates. However unlike contemporary frigates, a modern corvette does not have sufficient endurance or seaworthiness for long voyages.

That's basically because the lines between classes of modern warships have become blurred to the point where they've become almost meaningless.

Dad only did a few trips across the "Pond" on a Flower class and said something very similar. He reckoned nobody got away with a trip without being seasick  ;D

Smallest ship dad served on was a sloop in the Indian Ocean and largest was a carrier in the Pacific, and he reckoned none of them were particularly good sea keepers
