The ladder thing..yeah ..not so much .
If it aint broke ,,fix it until it is .
Over kill is often very understated .
I know the voices in my head ain't real but they do come up with some great ideas.
Theres few of lifes problems that can't be solved with the proper application of a high explosive projectile .

It did cross my mind whether the phrase "Hedge Trimmer" was in use in the 40's...

A hand-wound two man operated hedge trimmer was shown on a TV  gardening programme some time ago.  I think it was early 20th century  and was used at a stately home.  I have a vague memory (indeed he has, says Madame Rheged)  that it was actually labelled the  LITTLE WONDER HEDGE TRIMMING MACHINE

Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

Looks like you'd have the senior gardener holding the blade area and guiding it across the hedge for an even cut - while the young lad holds the end and turns the handle as hard and fast as he can.
