Worst paint ever?

If it ain't one thing, it's another. This little bugger of a Transall has plastic that doesn't seem to take paint very well, so I decided to try some primer. In my older, pre-hiatus days I never bothered with it, but thought it might help.

Man, did I ever screw up! I got some Model Master Custom Enamel System 2937 Gray Primer and fired away.

The dreaded 'orange peel' effect.

After 2 weeks it still seems rubbery.

Trying to sand it smooth clogs up the paper quickly.

It has now increased my workload incredibly, as I now need to try to get it off a very small plane without messing up the rest of it.

The MM 4769 Acryl white seems to be running a close second. It doesn't cover evenly and needed more coats than I can remember to look even half decent.

Sorry, had to vent.

Any white/yellow/red!

Grrrrrrr.........

Great, thanks a bunch. The Breguet Atlantic fire bomber I was planning would be in Securite Civile colours, either red on white or red on yellow.

WHY DO I DO THIS TO MYSELF?!?!?!

Prime the model with Tamiya IJN Grey and then use the other colours.

That's the only way I can manage it!

It's a pity you can't get Halfords paint over there. The white plastic primer is brilliant.
Rat-San, if you can try some Humbrol paints. They NEVER give any problems at all.

I 've always used Model Masters Grey primer 2737E. Never had a problem with it. Maybe something to do with the wrong thinner?

Oversprayed it with the "difficult" colors like white and yellow later worked fine.

For white I always use MM Flat white, sprayed in thin layers it covers very nicely. And you can always give it a shiny finish with some future.

Good luck on the recovery

Sure Lancer, Humbrol paints have a huge problem.

They are in those backdated tins with no screw tops!

Yeah, every time I pass the Humbrol rack I get itchy fingers, and in storage I have dozens of tins. My personal favourite since the sixties. But I am unfortunately and unwillingly stuck in a small, poorly ventilated and extremely crowded basement apartment until July next year, and figure that once I've cleared a small space on the coffee table on which to work it's easier and safer to work with materials which can easily be cleaned up with good old H2O.

But Summer's coming, and if we get a decent one I can work outside a bit, so waiting is an option.

But I'm getting tired of not having this little bugger finished!

And Ollie, if you're willing to stir slowly and steadily for a while you can take a thirty-year-old Humbrol tin and get good paint from it. Just get some linament for your wrists!  ;)

Oh, they might be good, but the tins are crap.

If the paint hasn't dried out, that is. The tins quickly become unusable once you've used about half the paint.

Yeah, I've noticed lately that getting into my Aeromaster paints is getting harder and harder

I've still not been defeated by one yet, but I have damaged a doorframe and given myself an indian burn on the palm of my hand.

As a result I don't tighten them as tight as they'll go anymore, but just crack them back a little bit from there.

Lee, about those screw-tops, all you have to do is run them over hot tap water, and then they very easily come off.

I do it all the time.

you can also wipe clean the lid every time you use them, it's even easier.

I put a piece of cling-wrap plastic on top under the cap, close tight, then flip the bottle over once. It usually helps seal it better, and helps it come off more easily.

Even better could be Teflon tape. As long as you keep the threads and cap clean, it'll seal it but make it easy to remove. I haven't tried it myself but will do so and report.

Yes, that's truly a pain in the... neck.

King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

Just ruined my B777, V-22 and Prowler because of that fecking humbrol paint.
