OK, so the other day I said I was working on a 1/48 J-79-engined Canadian MiG-21. Well, here it is in progress:

Wingtip missile rails, extra air vents in the rear to cool the beast...

The J-79 nozzle and A/B bucket (from a Testors F-4G kit) fit really well with a few cuts from the razor saw...

Underneath. Extra bits (also from the F-4G kit) replicate the ECM pods fitted to CF-104's in the late-70's.

The base kit was the OEZ Leothrad MiG-21MF/bis/SMT kit -- an excellent kit if you can find it, and I am a total sucker for old Eastern Bloc kits (VEB, KP, OEZ...). When finished, it will wear the 80's low-vis CF-104 scheme and will be carrying Sidewinders, three drop tanks and six Snakeeyes on TER's

There is also a large backstory that goes with it, and I will be posting the generalities to the "Alternative Histories" section of the forum.

Comments?

Looks great to me, Rally.  And it's really not that much of a stretch as the MiG-21's engine was of a very similar configuration to the J79.

On WOW!!! That is one beautiful MiG Rallymodeller!!. I LOVE the MiG 21 series and the mod's you've put on that beauty really make her look even sexier than usual. Mind if I borrow the wingtip rails idea for my RAF MiG that I'll be building after my RAF MiG29??

Well, yours sure looks better than mine at this point.

And...it's Canadian.... sigh...

Keep the in-prog pics coming.

Aw shucks, my friend, you are doing one fine job on that MiG. It's looking very sleek and fast. Bravo Zulu!

Got one side of it all decalled up. Take a look:

Sorry about the blurriness of the pic. Was running out of battery power in the cam...

Anyhow, what we have here is a CF-109 S/N 109326, in the markings of 421 "Red Indian" Squadron c. 1976. Stay tuned!

That just looks excellent.
Love the wing-tip rails too.
Why didn't I think of that?

Very pretty

It makes me wonder, though.  Has anyone thought of doing a tailless delta/canard MiG-21?  Or maybe a swept wing variant instead of a delta?  It would sorta look like a skinny Lightning. . .Hmmmmmmmm. . .

There was one delta-winged MiG-21 built -- the MiG-21 Analog:

Was built to test the wing configuration for the Tu-144. Pretty sexy, no?

RM, what version of the Mig 21 did you use??. From the the huge hump on the spine, I'd wager that it might've been the SMT??? I've just started my Fujimi SMT as an RAF version.

Good eye! It is, in fact, the "SMT" spine. The OEZ kit fuselage is molded with the MF spine in place, and it must be cut away (and part of the tail!) to install the bis or SMT spines. I have another of the SMT kits that I am going to do up as a Soviet 'bis' interceptor in natural metal.

BTW, I'm looking for the other two OEZ 1/48 kits -- the MiG-23 and Su-7BKL/BMK (I have the Su-25). Anyone has them, let me know -- I have trade goods or I can buy them...
