"The Soviet Union, however, took an initial step. In 1948, the Soviets developed a draft design for Project 621—a large landing ship-transport submarine—that, in addition to a battalion of troops, tanks, and vehicles, was to carry three La-5 fighter aircraft in a hangar built into the conning tower. The aircraft would be launched by catapult. Project 621 was the only known Soviet aircraft-carrying submarine to reach that stage of design.

"Although, as it turns out, the Soviets never took the project beyond design, in the early 1950s, US intelligence agencies did give credence to the possibility of a submarine-launched nuclear air attack against Strategic Air Command bomber bases.

In a hobby shop, I saw someone who cut up a typhoon and re-assembled it in the "conventional" manner with missiles behind the sail.  What about keeping it the way it was but with additional room behind the sail?  What about removing missile tubes for troops guns or aircraft?  the bow is large enough to launch VSTOL and helicopters.

Ugh... Carlton Meyer.  His old stuff is OK, if not a bit out there, but the stuff at his new website is, um, best way to put it is "way off."

Polmar and Moore's Cold War Submarines has some great stuff about LST subs (diagrams and whatnot), as well as SSV's and massive undersea transport and tanker subs.

I did a sketch of a Typhoon that was converted into a SSVN of sorts, where the forward part of the sail opened up to reveal either an elevator of ramp from below.  The bow opened up to extend a ski-jump.  Behind the sail the hull was lengthened to allow for helicopters to be operated off that part of the hull.

Well, Todd and a few others will know that the Scinfaxi and Hrinfaxi are the ultimate giant multi-role subs

Eh?!?!!?  Please clarify and add a link or two if avalible

The old Amiga flight sim F/A-18 Interceptor had a soviet submersible aircraft carrier in the last mission. It basically resembled a scaled up Typhoon with a catapult and small angled deck infront of the conning tower, which looked similar to the one on the Enterprise.

COMRADES!!!

My apologies, comrade Gen. Vespernoliavich.  We were trying out our lazy Western accents and attempting to fool one another with their corrupt speech.

And if indeed you have read my mind, the KGB will be contacting you shortly.

But before that, I nominate you for Hero of the Soviet Union, and the Order of Lenin!!  And Vodka.  Cases of Vodka!

Conning tower needs to go further back, and it should have somewhat of an angled deck on it. Sure a Mig-29 can land on the rear deck, but if it misses the wire the conning tower will be in for a royal owning.

No 'fixed wing' types on this baby.........

VSTOL only, as well as rotors. A/C launch from the front, via a ski-jump, and are recovered at rear, using the beartrap system. Then they are carted down the ramp and into the hangar. This allows for quick launches and recoveries, allowing the sub to dive in between actions.

Comrade Toadorov, whilst not doubting the imagination and ambition of your shipyards design, the Peoples Department of Military Fiscal Auditing is becoming more and more concerned at the delays in your projekt!

Further delays to this flagship of Socialist Naval engineering cannot be tolerated!  Questions are being asked in the Kremlin!

Should further delays be forthcoming, the cancellation of your projekt will be the least of your concerns.  I have heard shipbuilding is difficult in Siberia!

VSTOL = Much too technically complex and cumbersome to operate, and lacks proper fixed-wing payload capacity to have proper power projection/sudden strike capability.
At the very least, it should be capable of operating Mig-27K or SU-24K types, so proper nuclear annihilation can be dealt the capitalist pigs.

But yeah, build that and in the meantime I'll draw plans for a soviet submersible carrier that rivals US fleet carriers in size, totally in line with the soviet fetish for all things enormous :)

So, comrades, have our agents in Britain "steal back" the plans for the "Skyhook" system that they obviously stole from our glorious designers in the first place.

Comrade, you have obviously been brainwashed by too much capitalist propaganda. We may have to revoke your internet connection.
The imperialists may have insisted our STOVL programs were failures and have been cancelled, but this was in fact merely a ruse engineered by our ingenious comrades of the KGB.
Our superior and persistent engineers have kept working on the Yak-141 and its follow-on, assisted again by the KGB who kindly let us know what the stupid imperialists were working on so we would not have to repeat their mistakes (JSF! Gah!).
So, comrade, some day soon you will witness the unveiling of a STOVL derivative of the Su-27, and you will tremble before its awesome power {censored}and bloody racket{/censored}.
