1945- The US Navy decided it needed a specialized anti-submarine aircraft, one that combined bothe hunter and killer duties.  Grumman entered the Twin TBF and was awarded a contract for three aircraft.

The required specs:

*land based aircraft
*long combat radius
*mounted with a radome and sonar eqipment
*carry at least two torpedos or eight depth charges
*4 man crew, Pilot, Co-Pilot, Sonar and Weapons personnel

The TBF being a great and capable platform to start with was an excellent canidate to mate two aircraft into one.  The gun turret was retained on the left side of the aircraft and the right fuselage was used for all the electronics, the glass on the canopy and turret was overpainted to protect the delicate equipment installed underneath.  This was the second of the three aircraft, number 1 crashed during testing and 2 and 3 served for 4 years before being phased out in favor of the carrier capable Grumman AF Guardian.  The two remaining aircraft were later sold as surplus and converted to fire bombers(possible repaint?) in the canadian wilderness.  There current whereabouts are unknown.

The EF-86T was a development of the world famous F-86 Sabre by North American aviation, intended as an high altitude recon aircraft, it was powered by an eggsperimental General Egglectric engine. However, no order was forthcoming from the USAF and the only prototype spent its life as an unarmed aircraft researching high speed, high altitude flight.
