in this thread... a lot of 1980s speculation on modern soviet jets were shown...  professional whatiffing. anyways, i really dug the idea of a proto-fulcrum so here ya go

(shown next to a partially completed fulcrum, btw, its more of a magenta color in person... dont ask)

its a 1/72 kitbash of hobbycraft's cf-18 and mig-29, they were the cheapest junk kits in the store, but not by enough... more on that later.

anyways as you can see, i grafted the squared off fulcrum wings, and later on the chopped down tail, onto a shortened hornet. so far the biggest headache was transplanting the wheel wells onto a partially assembled fuselage. im sure that swapping cockpits and installing the intakes will be fun as well. its not pretty but its only a nights worth of mostly brute force

as for the donor kits... i shouldve stuck with italeri or something, hobbycraft plastic is hella hard, the decals arent worth keeping, and the mig-29 kit doesnt even have missiles! i am glad though that i had no intention to build what was on the box(es).

any suggestions on doodads to put on? dont worry folks, this fuzzy bunny will have wingfences from here to eternity

You need a "Flight Line Badge" for Ramenskoye Flight Test Center as a part of the project...  Wonder if anyone can create one for that purpose or better yet, see if someone in Russia can get you one.  Would be a good thing to have with the finished project "for display purposes"

 Great! The best would be a final gallery as (from left to right) CF-18, E-49311, Fulcrum... :D  Hibridization is not only for flowers, half-breed beauties may appear everywhere... ^_^

Lookin' good, I love the name :)  I can just picture the Gorton's fisherman in the cockpit!

A quick update for tonight... the tailboom is intended for just a drag-chute so thatll probably get shortened a bit. I tried mashing the Mig-29s intakes on but there was no way to do that without chopping up the area further. The piece around the cockpit isnt attatched yet, but thats about how itll sit. Its looking like this will look really stout from the side.  Weapons will consist of a gun under the fuselage(a la mig-27) with missiles on the wingtips.

Good thing i got a new tube of putty :dum:

Any ideas for a paint scheme? Im planning something prototype/preproduction.

Amazing how much more MiG like it looks now that you've added the cockpit area. (well of course it does...DUH! :dum: )

I like it!

For the paint scheme, I'd use the colours in the drawings that got you into this project.

Or, keep the three-tone look, but go w/ normal MiG-29 colors (grey/green-grey) or something like what the Flankers are sportin now.

From the side, it now has a really odd profile, a fulcrum-hump plus a long hornet nose made extra pointy. plus the fuselage behind the cockpit looks unusually deep.  ...Which is all fine because I didnt want it looking too much like the original kits, especially the F-18. The canopy will be sideways hinged, like previous migs. The instruments in the cockpit are a decal from a heller super etinard, (which was a victim in my most recent zero-length takeoff experiments... )

As for camoflage, im thinking of putting a twist on the three tone camo like in Ollie's picture.. replacing the tan with light gray. Extra disruptive.

I still can't find one, but this really would be more appropriate for display... with all of my kitbashes and whiffs...

If all else fails, I could make one up and just print it out.

Here's proof that the prototype still exists. It's temporarily grounded due to a sheet styrene shortage. On the plus side, all the major puttying is pretty much over. *knock on wood  *
