The Wooksta!

I did suggest this a while back but it was poopoohed on the (baseless IMO) grounds that "Boo hoo, I don't want to build that kit"

Now, given that Airfix are being clever and actually giving the modeller what they've asked for (that's a mainstream injection TSR2 for the stupid), perhaps it's a good time to dust this one down again?

Rules:
1: Any Airfix kit is eligable and available for use.  That means ships, cars, etc and any kit issued under the Airfix label.  Which means a PM Me 328.

2: Model must be completed as a wif.  Obviously.

I suspect there would be quite a bit of overlap with the TSR2 group build.
Would a kitbash (Revell Tornado GR1 plus Airfix GR4 bits) be allowed?

Well, I was in for the other one when it was first suggested. Hell, I've still got the 2 kits I built for it sitting on my paint locker.  And, yes I woulkd be up for taking part again, so long as I don't build the dammed airfix Panther tank!!!!!

No, if this one does take off, then one of the rule should be no cross over with the TSR2 GB. That way it means that the builder has got to put in a little more thought as to what he/she wants to build.

I'm so there it's not funny. Is there going to be a person who'll drive it forward? Will someone sponsor a prize like has been done for the last few successful group builds? (the prize is actually just a mild carrot on a stick, but it add to the fun and encourages people)

You know, I really love all these group build ideas, but they are not being driven forward. Leigh Mike Trophe and Myself have sponsored group builds with prizes. I said this before, without someone to drive it, it won't happen. I'd love to support this one but I've done two so far. (boy, I really sound bitchy don't I) Let's have some of these fantastic ideas supported please.

Well, my personal opinion is that the community isn't big enough to support more than one GB - what happens is someone suggests a GB, everyone goes "great idea, I'll join!", and people end up commiting to multiple GBs but only building for 1 or 2.  Then the organisers of the GBs get upset at all these people saying they'd support a GB, which then turns out to be a damp squib cf Racing Tanks and Allied Naval Forces.

I've seen it on ARC and Armorama which are much bigger communities than ours.  If you get 50% of the people who commit to a GB to actually finish a kit, in my experience thats a good yield.  There are only a handful of modellers who IMO build at a pace quick enough to be in more than 1 GB at a time - Wooksta, Anthony, Martin, maybe one or two others.  Everyone who's volunteered so far, how many kits have you finished this year?  I've done just 5 (five).

Then you have to factor in that many of us are building for GBs on other websites, or for themes for displays at model shows etc, not including the ones we like to build for ourselves.

Also I don't like them stacking up too far in advance.  Between the Tophe GB, then the Secret Santa GB, then the TSR2 GB we're already booked up till October 31st 2006!!

So I say, its a great idea, but leave it with all the other great ideas in this forum.  For me, the time to start pushing for the next GB after TSR2 is months away.

How hard was Leigh's Fabulous One Weeker to organzie and execute?  It had quite a bit of participation, and was entertaining to watch.  Maybe we can condense the Airfix GB into a month or two quickie, and still have the TSR.2 one going on parallel.  I have zero interest in the TSR.2 build (that is one ugly airplane), but an Airfix build, even if it's a month or two, is something I'd like to participate in.

Right then I'll toss in my thruppenny bit piece.
As Nev said if we get too far ahead and or run them concurrent there's the possibility of either or both being a fizzle.
Personally I'll try and participate in any group build here 'cos I love 'em but I find myself overextending myself and I know Secret Santa and TSR2 are gonna cost me the Matchbox and Battle of Britain builds on ARC. I think a quickie build is probably a good idea and we do have a year before TSR2's are due so maybe a two monther over next spring.
As for my personal participation, I'll always try but although I do have plenty of Airfix in the stash nearly all I want build as real planes so the potential whiffery is slim but that's just me.
As for organising one all it takes is the willingness to pitch in a few bob for a prize maybe and to start a thread.

Said it before and I'll say it again it only takes TWO people to make it a group build, and as Gary and I can attest to if you build it they will come.

Lee as for a Frog build I'm absolutely in. Gannets a gogo :D

I invite all and any criticism, except about Eric The Dog, it's not his fault he's stupid

OK here's my two pennyworth

IMHO Nev is correct in saying that we are to small to operate more then one GB at a time, UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES, however in this case I do think we have an exception.

Most people in the UK will be building at least one TSR2 once it's released anyway, the rest of the world will depend on availabilty as much as anything else, so what we have with the TSR2 is not so much a GB but a "Show us your finished TSR2".

Therefore I do feel that we can fit an Airfix GB in to run after the Secret Santa's build (Lee did you get my PM, re Telford ?) as long as we keep it down to a month or two at most.

I'm more then happy to run it if Lee is busy with the TSR2 build and I'll even put up an appropriate prize or two - about time I thanked the site for re-inspiring me.

So how's that for a proposal then ?
